non-primary domain expired, caused primary to quit working

Surely I’m missing something, but my old domain just expired and when I went to make sure my current primary domain still pointed to my web site correctly, it said the entire site was down. So I paid the money to renew the old one, only to see that my primary domain should be good for another 7 months.

Why would it say my site was down if I typed in the current domain web address? They want to make me pay for a domain I don’t even want anymore to make the real domain (which I also pay for) to work?

    What am I doing wrong?
