  Is a small non-profit organization using wordpress.com permitted to host an auction on their site or do they have to employ self-hosting to do this?

  The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  Hi there,

  Dedicated auction sites are not allowed, as @timethief indicated, but if this is a once-off charity auction it should be okay.

  There are some technical limitations, though. You won’t be able to install any type of auction plugin here, so you’ll need to use contact forms or comments or something to do it, so in that sense using a self-hosted site might work better.
