non-profit neighbourhood group and sponsor promotion…are they ads??
-
Hi. I am setting up a blog for our local neighbourhood group. Once it is set up we will be looking to upgrade to our own domain, but I wish to have things permanently set up through wordpress.com as not all our members are techies by any standard and like any volunteer group, exec members come and go…and the ‘webmaster’ hat may change many times. My (our) concern is how to acknowledge donations/sponsorships via the blog. Can we acknowledge donations, services and the like by linking to their sites if they have them or by placing a business card image as acknowledgement or is that considering advertising/revenue building?? Please see the following blog link and scroll to ‘sponsors’ for an example of typical handling by area neighbourhood groups http://www.infrastack.com/khng/KHNG.aspx . Does this breach wordpress.com policies? Thanks in advance for your help. I don’t want to mislead our board executive on how this will work at our next meeting.

It is fine for you all to acknowledge your sponsors and donators by having a list of sponsors, as long as it is kept very simple and doesn’t include any advertising. (i.e,. don’t included any coupons, or direct ads for your sponsors – keep it to a list)

Thanks that makes things pretty clear, but just to 100% clarify…
if I set up a separate Sponsors page, and Tom Thumb asks for a link to Yo-Ko Real Estate Company homepage on that page only, in exchange for buying the hotdogs for Kids Day at the Splash Park…I can say ‘okay’? Or is that ‘direct advertising’? To me it does seem pretty direct…if not likely very profitable for Tom Thumb or Yoko Real Estate. They will look like nice folk (which is what they want)…but aren’t going to have people flocking to them in droves. People will have to leave the home posts page to even find them. I doubt our ‘audience’ will ever be ‘thousands’….we are just hoping for an interactive venue for people in our own little corner of the world…
I know blogs like ours aren’t want WordPress is worried about…but rules are rules and as in the ‘no ads’ policy…they are there to avoid the bigger problems. They still do have to apply across the board to be fair. -
That should be fine as long as you keep them off to a separate page and make it clear that they are just event sponsors.
