Non-technical Issue with WP.com Reader
-
I’m not having a technical issue but want to ask why the decision was made to change a particular feature of the WP Reader last year? Personally, I’m not crazy about clicking on a post in the reader and NOT being taken to the blogger’s actual site. I also don’t understand why some posts appear as a full version of the post and other blog posts appear as a snippet of the post followed by the disclaimer, {“Sorry, this blog only allows us to show the first section of a post. (click here to) Read Full Post”}
I’ve given it some time to see if I would adjust to “the new way”, but to be honest, I dislike it more than ever. I much prefer the old way which takes me directly to the blogger’s blog site. So, would you please share with me and any others who may find this feature troublesome and too click-laden and explain the reasoning behind it? Thanks so much.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Sorry can’t remember all the reasoning for the changes & the reduce traffic to a blog etc. – the changes were not well liked by many of the folks here and quite a few changed readers
But if you want to go directly to a blog from the Reader, click on the little time stamp in the lower left corner of the entry in the Reader – opens the blog in a new tab / window
-
Thanks so much for the quick response and the tip, which I tried and it works! Since I take, from your response, that there are many more like myself who voiced their dislike to these changes, do you think the powers behind WP might consider a redo? Thanks again.
-
Sorry auxclass…my last question about the possibility of a WP Reader redo was meant for and will hopefully be seen and answered by a member of the WP staff. Thanks again for the help!

The last set of changes to the Reader occurred last October and gave rise to a lengthy thread that you can read Staff responses in https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/reader-changed?replies=445Personally, I’m not crazy about clicking on a post in the reader and NOT being taken to the blogger’s actual site.
I’m with you on that. However, If you click the little time link on the bottom left corner you will click directly into the posts.
I also don’t understand why some posts appear as a full version of the post and other blog posts appear as a snippet of the post followed by the disclaimer, {“Sorry, this blog only allows us to show the first section of a post. (click here to) Read Full Post”}
That’s because some of use, myself include insert “the more tag” into our posts. I don’t blog to provide WordPress.COM Reader users with a magazine and I think those who offer full posts must not have any issues with content theft. Well, I do. I choose to insert the more link into each and everyone of my posts because the only place I want the full version of any of my posts to appear on is exactly where they are published ie. on my blog. Despite that tag those with mobiles can still read my full posts in the Reader.
Perhaps you’d like to read my post > Worrisome (or not) WordPress.com Reader Developments

I also use the More Tag – the effect on the Reader is a good side effect since I started using the More Tag to keep the front page clean and easier to navigate, visitors only need to see the whole Post of those they want to read
-
Mobile users are the exception. They can read the full post even though we insert the more tag. Note if you read my post you will see the questions that I intend to put to Staff after sxsw at the very end of the post.

timethief – thanks for the clarifications and older forum link. Also thanks for the tip on how to get directly to blogs via the time stamp. Auxclass had also suggested it, so thanks to you both. I’ve just skimmed through some of the old forum comments and it seems there are many more issues bloggers have other than the one that caused me to start this thread. I also just quickly read through your post and ‘liked'( just to let you know I stopped by to read it). I intend to read it again because it has so many good points and you raise a lot of good questions. Back to the comment you left for me here: I have just recently started to insert the ‘more tag’ into my longer posts. I ‘follow’ my own blog so that I can see how my posts look in the reader. Before I began inserting “more tags” on ‘standard’ posts and when I clicked on the title of any of my blog posts in the reader, it would still show an excerpt that was followed by the disclaimer…Sorry this blog only allows ……. You indicated this happens because the more tag has been used when I’m thinking that may not be the case. Before I asked the question about the snippet followed by the ‘sorry’ disclaimer in this thread, I wondered, (1) if it might apply only to those WP members, like myself, who pay extra for a domain name and/or paid for a premium upgrade in order to get more editing gadgets to use within a “free” theme. (2) If other members, like myself until today, don’t know about the option of clicking on the time stamp, and instead click on the post title in the reader; does the reader show the full post only of those members who don’t pay for any extras, who use a free WordPress theme and have only a .wordpress.com domain name? Also, like you, I wondered if in those cases when the full post is shown in reader, does it result in a “visit” and/or a “view” on the blogger’s stats? So many questions, so little time :) Thanks so much for your input.

@bookpeeps
I’m visually challenged and you just posted a huge block of text without any breaks or white space in it. I’m sorry but I can’t cope with that today I’m copying and pasting your text into an offline app and will get back to here to answer your after I read it there. -
timethief – so sorry about that and I should have taken the time to add that white space. I too would be overwhelmed by my rant! No worries.

Hi again,
I cannot answer your questions. I tagged this thread for a Staff response. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting. -

Hi there!
I’ll try to answer all of the questions you’ve posted, but feel free to repost any that I’ve missed!
This disclaimer pops up when you have set your feed to display snippets rather than full posts. You can find this setting through your dashboard at Settings > Reading:
If ‘Summary’ is marked, this disclaimer will display in the reader and direct people to visit your site for the full article. You can control where the break point is for your posts by using the More Tag or by using custom Excerpts.
This setting applies to everyone. Each blog free or paid can control this through their Reading Settings page.
(2) If other members, like myself until today, don’t know about the option of clicking on the time stamp, and instead click on the post title in the reader; does the reader show the full post only of those members who don’t pay for any extras, who use a free WordPress theme and have only a .wordpress.com domain name?
This seems like the same question as above? Every account has this setting. Let me know if you had something else in mind that I can clarify here.
Also, like you, I wondered if in those cases when the full post is shown in reader, does it result in a “visit” and/or a “view” on the blogger’s stats?
When someone clicks on your post and it opens in the pop over viewer, this will result in a “view” just like if someone were on your site looking at your post.
So many questions, so little time :)
I feel ya! :) Let me know if I can clarify anything further!
