non-WordPress followers

My followers are chiefly 3 types- WordPress bloggers, email subscribers and Facebook followers.
    1. How do I make setting to allow non-Wordpress bloggers (e.g Google Blogger, BlogSpot etc) to make comments? Can they comment without being a follower?
    2. how can non-wordpress bloggers follow me directly via their blog ? (not via email).
    3. what is the difference between logged-in and registered followers?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • 1. If you go to Settings ->Discussion on your dashboard the first two options under “Other comment settings” are “Comment author must fill out name and e-mail ” and “Users must be registered and logged in to comment”. If you leave the second one unchecked then non-wordpress members will be able to leave comments, as long as they also enter their email address (other commenters won’t see this email address – only you as administrator of the blog can see it). You can uncheck the first as well, but the requirement to have commenters at least leave their email gives some protection against spam and trolls.

    2. They can follow your blog’s RSS feed via a feed reader. Some blogging platforms already have that functionality built in, but you’ll have to check the support documents of those platforms on how they work. Here’s the wordpress support doc on RSS feeds: http://en.support.wordpress.com/feeds/

    3. As I understand it, on the reading settings page where it says users must be registered and logged in to comment, registered means they must have a username and account on WP.com and logged in means they must be logged in to that account to leave comment, i.e. they won’t be able to comment if they’re logged out even if they have an account. But as I said at #1, if you leave that box unchecked this won’t be a problem.

kokkieh, would you know how to remove mapping?

  • @sambacineclub, I have no direct experience with that, no. I see you’ve already opened a thread in the forum on that. Just be patient. Someone else is sure to reply before too long.

In the meantime, I suggest you update that thread with some more detail, including the URLs of the domains involved. That will make it easier for someone who knows how it works to help you.

    Hello Kokkieh
Thank you for the prompt reply. Your advice was very helpful. Thank you.
But by unchecking second option, non-wordpress bloggers will not subscribe. They will not become followers since they can post comments without registering.

Isn’t that a disadvantage, since I lose followers?

Unchecking the “must have an account to comment” will not affect your followers in any way – why would someone stop following a blog just because they don’t need an account to leave a comment – – I don’t require anyone to have an account to leave a comment – I want to make it easy for someone to leave a comment not harder

  • To add to what auxclass said, people will follow your blog because of your content, not because they have to be logged in to comment. And registered wordpress users can anyway comment without having to follow your blog.

yes, I appreciate the ease of making comments.
But I also like to see my number of followers grow.

I may have, in actuality more visitors (non wordpress), than wordpress; but they will not be acknowledged in my follower statistics.

is there any way out to include these non-wordpress commentators as followers ; without forcing them to email-subscribe?

  • I’m afraid not. Something you can do is under Settings ->Reading set the option “For each article in a feed, show” to summary. That way people who follow your blog via a feed reader will be forced to click through to your blog to read posts, rather than reading them in the feed reader. It’s a gamble, though, as some people might feel clicking a link is too much extra trouble to go to and they’ll just not do it.

Best thing you can do is create good content, and make it as easy as possible for people to follow your blog by, for example, including a follow widget with a friendly customised invitation to follow your blog. Some themes also have an optional button where readers can easily grab your RSS feed for their readers, but I don’t know exactly how that works. Could be worth looking in to, though. (But people who follow you via feeds also won’t reflect in your follower stats.)

Also, I place much more emphasis on pageview stats and the number of comments, not so much on followers. The follower count is not an accurate reflection of how many people actually visit your blog as there are many spam followers out there (all those get rich by blogging schemes) and many people who only follow you in the hopes you’ll follow them back, but never actually read the blog. But that’s my opinion and I understand if you don’t agree.

I do agree partially. Thank you for the detailed answers. It did clear a few doubts.

  • You’re welcome. Happy blogging.
