Non-YouTube video embedding problems

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,
Next Friday I’m going to be interviewed on our local Fox affiliate about my new book. I already spoke to the producers and they said there is no way of giving me the raw video file to upload to youtube (which is easy to embed in WP).
My only solution then is to use the embed code or URL of the video. But, after searching the forums and half a dozen youtube videos, none of the tips work. Each step I take, from inserting the code in text mode or trying to disable the hyperlink, results in pasting the actual link or the actual code with no video player embedded. Is there something I am doing wrong? Here is the dummy page for my test videos: https://velwythe.wordpress.com/?page_id=852&preview=true
(note the top link was inserted in visual mode, the bottom in text mode).
Here is a link to the Fox website and just some random video from their player (which includes the embed/URL info I was pulling from): http://fox13now.com/2016/11/09/recipe-easy-candied-yams/

Let me know if there is anything I can do to make the actual video show up in the page (or preferably on the sidebar widget area using the text widget).
    Thanks in advance!

  • Hi @wasketts, did they feature your video on their site? I’m not familiar with the ooyala embedder they’ve mentioned here, but if you’ll send a link to the actual video they’ve posted I may be able to figure it out from there.

Here are our supported video embeds, by the way:

    Working With Video

    Hi @supernovia,
I have not been on the show yet. I go on next Friday the 18th at 9:00 in the morning. As soon as I have the footage I will post back here and let you know. I did find your list of supported embeds before I posted…but unfortunately I have no control over how the post or what they give me :P
It will, however, be the exact same format as the one originally posted. Is there anything else you need? If not, I will post again after the interview. Thanks for the assistance here, and sorry it’s such a bother.

  • I’ll see what I can recommend. Also, what codes have you tried so far? You can insert them here if you’ll mark them as code with the form post editing tools.

I haven’t tried any code beyond what the video on the Fox website provides (both the embed and share options). As for what they gave me, one of the forums mentioned adjusting the pixels size from 700 (or whatever it is exactly) to 150 when pasting the embed code, but that didn’t do anything.
The show is in two days so I will post back with an exact link then! Thanks!

  • Thanks @wasketts. I double checked here as to whether the code they gave you will work; it won’t. So we might need to explore other options or just link to their article when it goes up.

Thanks for the help @supernovia. I’m no expert with code, but do you know if there is anything I can do on my end to make sure this works? Is there anything I can ask them in person tomorrow? I’m going to meet with most of the news staff, so I’m sure someone there has the technical knowledge. If I can explain the problem in a specific way maybe they can provide an answer.
Any thoughts on what I can or should do? Thank you again!

  • @wasketts you must be excited for the interview! :)

The ooyala code won’t work on your site. But if they’re willing to upload it to their Youtube channel, you can embed it that way. It looks like they do put things up there sometimes:

    @supernovia
After a bit of creative persuasion I was able to get them to send me the mp4 file for the segment. With that I uploaded it to YouTube and used the share code, which is working beautifully even in the sidebar area. Thank you so much for the help! Glad we were able to get around the issue too (though I’m sure someone else has had that problem in the past).
    Happy Thanksgiving!
