Nonce. Derogatory term
-
Why do you, WordPress, use the term nonce, as in ‘nonce validation failed’, as it’s a very derogatory term here in the UK? It’s related to child sex crime. Anyone, especially a man, receiving the above message could well think that they’re being thought of as a child sex criminal. Not clever. I received the message when entering a blog post on a page upon which a competition depended, and which involved child days out at the seaside , and I was far from impressed at seeing the message!!

Hi there,
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I have reported this and we’ll discuss and look into this further.
Thank you!

What’s more, “nonce” is a basic technical concept in computer cryptography, not something made up by WordPress.
See Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryptographic_nonce
It’s like saying WordPress asking you to “Enter Your Password” is problematic because the word “password” has a negative regional connotation… totally ignoring the fact that the whole world has a basic understanding of what the word “password” means… which has nothing to do with your regional slang.

We’ll check in with some UK colleagues on this. But I can confirm the term is technical, and is built into the open source WordPress project itself:
https://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_NoncesCan you share where you’re getting the error message? Perhaps we could have some influence there. Thanks!
