Nonsense comment IP matches my own IP address!

  • Unknown's avatar

I recently had two stupid comments posted on one of my articles on my blog (both are still pending on my dashboard).

What worries me is that the IP address that has provided these two comments (which purport to be from two different people) is identical to my current IP address, and the one that is stated under comments that I have made myself.

What is the most likely explanation here? Could someone else in my house (using a different computer) have posted the comments with the same IP? Is it likely, or even possible, that someone else is using my computer as a proxy? Is it probably just a WordPress error?

    Help!

The likely explanation is that someone with the same internet service provider as you left the comment. It doesn’t mean it came from the same computer.

  • Yes, could be the same ISP. Could be someone using your wifi (if you have that). Guest in your house sharing your network?

It’s possible there’s a bug, but we’d need to rule some things out before that seems likely.
