Noob!

Hi–I have some experience with websites from some years back. I currently have a site that was developed and hosted by a third party that I maintain, but I would like to migrate it to WordPress (or redevelop it if necessary). I’d like to play around with WordPress on my local machine, or someplace else I can do it for free until I get it how I’d like it. My plan to host elsewhere once that is accomplished, but I need to keep my existing site up while I do it. I’ve read a little about Desktop Server, etc. but am a little overwhelmed. How is best to start? THank you!

If you want a site here at WordPress.com why not create a free site in the first instance. You can keep it set to private whilst you “play around” with it. If you want to “play around” with your own installation of wordpress you’ll need to check out WordPress.org:

Thank you for responding. I figured the only way to do that was to install it locally and I wasn’t totally understanding the multiple ways to do it. I’ll go back, reread and try again.
