Nook template – do any of the following features exist?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve been using WP for ages and switch templates every couple of years, but this one has got me flummoxed because some of the features I always use have disappeared. I like Nook but may have to abandon it. Or perhaps it’s just me. Please help!

    1. I used to have several menus nested under different topics. I can’t find any equivalent in Nook so years of content is now invisible to a reader who doesn’t know what to search for.
    2. No widgets! Categories, Years, and empty ones to create myself. No widgets at all??!
    3. No way to feature a post and keep it at the top.

I’m sure there will be others but these are the ones that popped up first. If I need these features, should I give up and look for a different template?

I am a beginner-level coder so reluctant to tamper in the back end.

    Thanks

Nook, being a Block Theme, works a little differently than the Classic themes you may have used in the past.

Taking a quick look at your site in the Internet Archive, I see you previously used Apostrophe 2, which BTW is still available.

And that IA page also helped me understand what you meant about your menus.

    1. Menus: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/navigation-block/ In order to create sub-menus https://wordpress.com/support/menus/create-drop-down-menus/
    2. Widgets are now Blocks (regardless of theme) and not all of the older widgets are available as blocks. So, for example, adding Categories you’d add the Categories block to Nook’s sidebar. https://wordpress.com/support/category/content-and-media/blocks/widgets-blocks/
    3. Sticky Post: should still be there, although it doesn’t seem to display differently in Nook than other posts; it just sticks to the top of the blog page.

Hope that helps answer some of your questions, but let us know if you need more help.

Hi, thanks very much for your input. And yes, I was using Apostrophe 2 until yesterday morning. But recently things have been going wrong with it so I decided to try a new broom as it were.

Thanks for your comments. I’ll work through them and let you know how I go. It seems I need to learn these new concepts,

You’re welcome! Getting to grips with the Site Editor can be a challenge and fortunately there are resources galore to help you (in addition to these forums), but start here> https://wordpress.com/support/site-editor/

But recently things have been going wrong with it…

As the Apostrophe 2 theme is still available and not retired, you should be able to receive support for it if you want to continue using it. For that, however, I’d suggest opening a new forum thread so it doesn’t all get mixed up in this one.

I am also trying to make a post a sticky post, but it doesn’t seem to appear on the “Home Page” when I make it. I am also using Nook theme. The site I need help is http://www.ram-and-raisins.com . Thank you.

@palramandraisins It looks like you changed the default query loop on the index page. If that is the case, did you include sticky posts in the query?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Wll check that out. Thanks

I’ve figured out most things now but the featured post still eludes me. Let me know if you crack it @palramandraisins! (and thanks for your kind comment about me site)

Sure Sue. Will revert. Thank you.

As 2020testji, said, I went to the Home page editor, and selected the front page block, and under that there is a TAB called ” POSITION “. It has a default view. It has to be changed to ” Sticky“.

    Then you save that Page.

Then you have to go to the Post which you want to make as “sticky” . When you edit that Post, to your right, you will have Block options to make that Post as STICKY. Just enable that option and SAVE. Your sticky post will appear in the front page as desired.

    Thank you.

Thank you. I did what you said. It worked.

@palramandraisins glad you figured it out.

@suethomas1 So terribly sorry, I thought you were asking something different. Here’s the support guide on how to make a post sticky. https://wordpress.com/support/posts/#sticky-posts

On my test site, with the default query loop on the index page (like yours), sticky posts look to be included. And so, for that post to appear as the first post on your blog page, you need to mark it as “sticky” when editing it.

I really recommend having only one (max. 2) sticky post on your blog. Otherwise, it can be confusing to site visitors looking for more recent posts.

    Hope that helps.

Just to mention one other thing concerning the contact form in your sidebar.

Conventional wisdom says to put the contact form button below the form itself rather than above it. It would be OK to have such a standalone button if it linked to a contact page rather than to the form immediately below it. :) (As we found out.)

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes thanks, will stick to just one

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks re contact form. I was surprised too when the button appeared at the top – could be movable – will try. Re placement, I used to have just a link but this is an experiment to see if it gets more engagement.

btw I’ve just cracked the Gallery, which turned out to be what I was used to, when I actually found it! And am sorting the drop-down menu too. Haven’t got to the sticky post yet.

Hi all, I’m back with another question! I’ve set up a search box but it’s only displaying 3 results per page. I can’t find any way to change this to either an infinite scroll or just a larger number – say 12 per page.

Has anyone found a way to do this?

    Thanks, Sue

Another question — in blog posts, I want to reduce the default size of the featured image. Any idea how to do that please? Can’t find a way.

    thanks

    Sue

The current Search Results seem to reflect the number of posts to display. If you look at your site’s front page, after 3 posts, there’s a link to “Next Page”. The same thing happens on your search results page. After 3 results, there’s a “Next Page” link with another 3 results.

You might want to edit Nook’s Search Template in the Site Editor in order to change this. When you go to Site Editor>Templates and open the Search Results template to edit it, 1. highlight the Query Loop in the List View on the left and in the right sidebar you’ll see a setting “Inherit Query from Template.” 2. Unselect it. That should allow you to 3. and 4. increase the number of search results directly in the Query Loop. 5. Remember to save your changes.

I might also suggest bypassing this whole thing and activating the free Jetpack Search option instead. https://wordpress.com/support/jetpack-search/

As far as reducing the Featured Image size, were you able to do so? If not, let me know what you’ve tried so far.
