Not a good idea to use more than one tag per entry?

  • Unknown's avatar

Most of the time I use 2 tags when posting an entry. Is this considered bad practice? I’ve noticed that it creates 2 different pages. Should I use just one tag and one category?

I’m wondering if this is creating my Google indexing problem – Google might be detecting duplicate pages internally.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Please paste the exact URL of your blog when asking questions here, or link your nickname to your blog (as explained in the Sticky 8 Things to Know Before Posting). We usually need that to give a relevant answer.

Those two pages aren’t duplicate content: they are dynamic pages, displaying posts filed under a certain tag or category.

Tagging and categorizing is good for search engines. Bad practice is using too many tags and/or categories per post; according to wp staff, a safe limit is around 10.

What is your “Google indexing problem”?

Yes, but…they can potentially turn into duplicate content, particularly if you post full posts. Albeit dynamic, the tag and category pages are still indexed by Google…not?

That’s how I understand it, but I could be wrong.

Husdal, you are correct. When I do a site:domain.com search, I’ll see:

    tag 1<< Post title 1

    tag 2<< Post title 1

The entries for each tag are identical.

My Google indexing problem is there are times I don’t show up in Google Blog search.

And the other problem I seem to have is my blog falls out of Google web search results. I’ve read in the Google webmaster forums that extreme fluctuations in ranking is usually due to duplicate content.

And I’ve noticed that Google has removed about 200 indexed pages. I was wondering if they were duplicates they found. There are still duplicate pages in Google for my blog.

So should I go through and delete multiple tags or is two okay for posts?

Do we know which blog the OP is talking about?

has 3 posts from February through July of this year.

Google is sophisticated enough to know the difference between a tag page and a blog post; it is NOT a problem, quite the contrary in fact. You can use up to about a dozen tags per post without any penalty whatsoever. Over that and you risk being classed as a tag spammer.

/nod to raincoaster, she knows what she is talking about on this.

Internally generated tags and categories pages do not in anyway mess up your page rank. The tags and categories pages are simply a different method of displaying the content of a particular blog, and the search engines know that because the tags and categories pages are on the same domain.

@sacred path – you and raincoaster both know your stuff. And husdal too!

@1tess – that’s just a test blog. The URL for the main one is in my second reply.

I was a bit concerned when I saw on Google webmaster that internally there were over 10,000 links generated on my blog. Good to know that’s alright.

Thanks to all of you for your help.

But its really difficult…I do understand one category for per post but only one tag….now I have a jobsite http://hrjobsi.com made in wp…for job search to make it easy i use multiple tags…like a person may be searching a job in hr, recruitment, recruiter … or staffing…does that mean my site will get penalised.
