Not all image links modified from import site

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

On importing my site from a WordPress.org site, only a few posts and pages have their image links modified to the WordPress.com site address.

The featured images are correctly specified, just the images in the body of posts and pages have empty image place holders with links to the old site

It seem all images were imported to WordPress.com. Is there another step or utility that needs to be run to complete the import.

Thanks for any help or pointers

    WP.com: Yes
    Jetpack: No
    Correct account: Yes

  • Hi @infovelamondocom , I spot-checked the site and did not see that. Could you share links to a few affected articles?

    Hi, thanks for replying.
This is one example. However it doesn’t show the empty image place holders using a mobile or tablet but does on a computer. All using Chrome browser.

Under the texts it should show several images

    thanks for your help

  • Hey there,

It looks like in the content itself, the image source is that of the CDN version of the image file – most likely generated by the previous host.

So for example in https://fcv2.wordpress.com/2022/03/13/1976-fulvia-1-3s-coupe-lancia-blue-with-tan-21500/ – the image link is: https://johnl189.sg-host.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/PXL_20220313_144635549.MP_-300x226.jpg

    Really, it should be: https://fcv2.files.wordpress.com/2023/03/542d2-pxl_20220313_144635549.mp_-scaled-1.jpg.

This would need to be re-added into the post.

    I hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, that’s exactly what has happened.
But why do the more recent posts have their links modified to the new site address and not the older posts and pages? Their doesn’t seem to be a rule to it, like only last 2years. When you import from a WordPress.org site shouldn’t all the links be modified? It’s imported the media ok.

Can all the old links be changed via a utility? My plan was once working upgrade to a premium option, would that make a difference?

    Thanks for your help.

  • Hey there,

But why do the more recent posts have their links modified to the new site address and not the older posts and pages? Their doesn’t seem to be a rule to it,

This inconsistency could be related to when the CDN was activated and de-activated on the hosts end.

Can all the old links be changed via a utility? My plan was once working upgrade to a premium option, would that make a difference?

So this can be done in bulk, using a plugin called Better Search and Replace – https://wordpress.org/plugins/better-search-replace/.

It can search the site for a phrase and and then replace it with another. You would need to change:

https://johnl189.sg-host.com/ with https://fcv2.wordpress.com/ (or whichever domain is in use). We often help our users with this process if need be. :)

This isn’t a facility that’s possible on the premium plan, but is possible to run via the business plan:

Is the self-hosted still active? If yes, this search and replace could be run on that installation and then you can attempt a re-import.

    I hope this helps.
