Not all my archived content is being imported
-
I have about 8 XML files that contain all my old posts from Xanga, but I noticed that not all the posts are showing up, at least in the ‘posts’ link. Did I do something wrong?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi nathonkim,
I can see a total of 122 posts on nathonxanga.wordpress.com at the moment, 21 of which are private. If there are more than that on Xanga, it would be great to know the following:
- Was each .xml file imported in turn (the current import finished before the next one was started)?
- Did you receive confirmation of the import for each file?
Just let me know and we can go from there.
-
Yes, my guess would be that there were over 500 posts.
I opened the xml files individually with a browser just to see what was in there and it looks like of the 8 files, only 2 or 3 were actually uploaded. Like numbers 1,2, and 7.
Yes, I did wait until I got the email notifications before starting the next upload.

Hi nathonkim,
only 2 or 3 were actually uploaded. Like numbers 1,2, and 7.
Okay, could you try reimporting the other files again to see if the remaining posts are imported second time around? Any content already imported should be skipped, so you shouldn’t end up with duplication.
I’ve also reset the importer on our end to make sure you have a clean slate to work from.

I tried just importing file number 3. I got the confirmation email, but it still looks like it didn’t come through. Should I wait longer? It’s been about 4 hours so far…
Also, should I have started over from the beginning? Or does it matter?
Do you think I should just manually cut and paste the remaining files into just one file and maybe see if that works?

Hi there,
Are you using the Xanga importer? There is no current pending import. Did the posts migrate over successfully?
If not, try importing the XML files over using the WordPress importer. sometimes that works much better. If the remaining files are under 15mb, then you can try combining them to one file, although I am not sure how much difference that will make.
However, try the import again with those suggestions in mind and let me know if you have any success. Thanks!

Hello,
I did use the xanga importer. The one xml file I tried again did not migrate over successfully.
I will try using the WordPress importer instead. The remaining files are under 15MB, but I will try the WordPress importer first.
Thanks!

BTW, should I be trying to import the zipped file or do I unzip and import the individual files. I have been doing the latter.
-
The importer should accept both
.xmland.zipfiles, so it shouldn’t matter. Here are our official instructions on importing from Xanga, in case you want to make sure that you are covering all needed steps:
-
Yes, I am very familiar with those instructions. I’ve been using Firefox… Maybe I should try chrome next…

Yes, I tried the wordpress importer after failing with the xanga importer.
Only a few of the 8 total files seemed to upload with the xanga importer… there’s a lot of missing content that, though looking through the .xml files, seem to reside in certain files.
-
I just tried my third file using Chrome, got the email that it was finished, but still the missing posts are not there.
I just created a single file by cutting and pasting all the other files into a copy of the file that actually was successful. At some time I’m going to try that if no one has any other suggestions. It’s really a mystery why the other files are not working.
I don’t know what the effect of importing the same posts over again will have… will there be duplicates… I’m really hesitant trying to import something that I essentially pieced together myself.

Hello all,
Thanks for your help. So I just tried something and it looks like it might be working! This is what I did…
First, screw the xanga importer. Got nowhere with that. I used the WordPress importer.
Second, instead of doing one file at a time, I did the entire .zip file.
Third, and this is the important part. After I dragged and dropped the .zip file, it took me to the screen where I have to assign it to someone.
PREVIOUSLY, it never let me do it – assign it to someone. I couldn’t click on anything and the only option was “Cancel”. The last time I tried, I just left it there hoping that something would eventually happen. I actually got a notice a few hours later saying it was completed, so I assumed it completed the operation for me – NOPE. Nothing new.
BUT I tried this again using Chrome. Initially I came to the same screen where nothing was clickable except “Cancel”. Out of frustration, instead of hitting “Cancel” I just navigated away… I think I went to Manage –> People. THEN I came BACK to Tools –> Import, and VOILA! The “Start Import” or some button like that magically appeared. Sounds like a software bug.
So then I clicked “Start” and it went to the next screen where it actually shows the progress of the import. In another browser (didn’t want to jinx my Chrome session), I took a look at Site –> Posts and noticed that my missing posts were now starting to populate. It’s still in the process, but it looks good. Keeping my fingers crossed.
That was an ordeal. You might want to append your xanga import instructions that if you have several .xml files, you might want to use the WordPress importer instead and either tell them they have to do this weird navigating away thing I did or get your software people to fix that bug.
