  I’m off to a bad start.

  I downloaded Easy WP Guide for WordPress 4.2 and from the start there’s a problem. My Dashboard doesn’t display my site name and no one is shown as logged in, when I obviously am. That should happen according the guide. There are other issues where the guide says options should be available, but they’re not.

  Is the guide wrong or is there some other problem?

  Nope. That guide is about WordPress.ORG sites and http://mediumcoolproductions.com/ is a WordPress.COM site.
