  Hi. If I understand correctly, you are trying to use a static front page. Everything you need to know (including how to remove the superfulous “home” tab) is here:
  http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/

  P.S. As soon as your front page is properly configured, you will no longer see the “404 file not found” error.
