Not getting email notifications about comments
-
I have checked Email checkbox in the Comments tab of Notifications settings in my Profile. Yet i still don’t get notifications by email and have to go to WordPress.com to see if anyone has replied me. I don’t need wordpress.com for anything, so going here just to see if anyone has contacted me is inconvenient.

Hi there,
What is the URL of the site you are having email notification issues? I checked under your account and I do not see any site connected to it.
Let me know, and I’d be happy to take a look into the issue for you.
Thanks!

So it only works for sites connected to WordPress.com? What i meant. I have commented on some blog (made with WP) and used my WP.com account to make that comment. When someone replies to that comment i see a notification when i go to WP.com site (a red dot), but i want to get an email about such reply, not just a red dot on WP.com, because as i’ve said i don’t need to go to WP.com daily, so i would miss replies because of that.

Gotcha. Those notifications emails are known to go into spam folders, so I would check your email account and make sure they did not end up there. Also, if you an provide me an example of a site where there was a comment reply, I can take a look on my end and see if there was an email sent to you once that reply was made.
Thanks!

I have checked my anti-spam filter right away, but there was nothing there (and i get replies by email from this forum post without a problem). Here’s my comment http://tabletoptogether.com/2016/09/15/essen-spiel-16-most-anticipated-games/#comment-128 You can also see this and another one if you can access my profiles notifications panel here (the one with the bell icon). I can still see them there. This blog accepts comments from wp.com, twitter, fb and g+. So i have logged with WP.com account and commented. Then got reply next day. No email notification though.

Ah, this may be a WordPress.org theme specific issue. In most comment sections on WordPress.org themes, there is usually an option to click a check box that says Notify me of follow-up comments by email. Either the theme doesn’t provide that option or the owner of the blog has disabled the option.
I will look further into the issue to verify that this is the case, but I believe you will only receive WordPress.com notifications since it is a WordPress.org site and not a WordPress.com site.
Thanks!

When you press Reply on that page it presents options:
Notify me of new comments via email.
Notify me of new posts via email.I think both are not what i need (not followups). And it is not very convenient to subscribe to every reply you do (confirmation email arrives and you have to confirm every time).
Ok, if that blog is WP.org based then why do i get red dot notifications to my WP.com account? This seems inconsistent, that web notifications work, but email notifications (enabled on the same page) don’t.
Anyway, WP notifications system always seemed a bit clunky with those separate subscriptions and confirmations. Disqus is not perfect, but at least i don’t miss anything.

Hi there,
I did some testing on my end and yes, I am also receiving notifications from a self-hosted site to WP.com, but not to my e-mail. This apparently has to do with a sync error associated with JetPack version 4.3 on the owner’s site. I checked and the owner is connected to JetPack.
This error should be corrected in the next update which should be coming out in the next few days.
I will be sure to keep you updated once I hear the updated is implemented. All self-hosted sites that update their JetPack plugins should receive the fix.
Thanks!

Thanks. Looking forward to that. I have enabled browser notification meanwhile (just haven’t had a chance to test how it works).
I don’t know that much about WP. But it was interesting to hear that this is handled by the hosted site itself (email notification). I was under impression that WP.com should be sending the emails instead.

Yeah, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are quite a bit different and are standalone by default. Here is more information on that:
The JetPack plugin enhances WordPress.org sites with features that are exclusive with WordPress.com, the comment section being one of them. So, you wouldn’t even receive notifications via WP.com if the hosted blog was not connected to JetPack. So, that is why there is a need to have the self-hosted site have an option to handle comment notification for sites not connected to WordPress.com via JetPack.
It’s a little tricky, but we’re working on making it a seamless experience for those who have their sites connected to JetPack.
Thanks!

I see. That explains why that blog has the WP.com option to comment, then my self-hosted blog doesn’t :)
