Not getting notifications.

  • Unknown's avatar

This is not the first time I have complained about this problem, and I don’t understand why it keeps happening.

I subscribe to my own blog because I “should” get an email notification each time post a new blog article. I use the email to share with my “address” book, for those who don’t subscribe.

The problem, as with the blog I posted today, is that I stop getting notifications. This happens sporadically and it has nothing to do with anything I do. I set up my notifications so that I am notified of new posts and comments, and I expect it to remain set up that with. I am not making any changes, and yet, I stop getting notifications from my blog. I haven’t checked my settings today, but my guess is that they have changed. (I may be wrong about that. I’ll see.) What I know for sure is that I did not receive my notification for this post. I assume that it is something you are doing, and I really wish that you would stop “tinkering” with my settings. Thank you.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Ernesto,

It looks like you have blocked us from sending you notifications. You can change this by navigating to WordPress.com then to Settings -> Notifications and unchecking “Block all email updates from blogs you’re following on WordPress.com”. Can you give that a try?

  • Unknown's avatar

No. “I” have not blocked you from sending me notifications. However, I will say, that when I went to check, my notifications were turned off, but I was not the one who turned them off. Why would I? I want to receive these notifications. For one thing, it informs me that notifications are being sent out.

No, Sir. I did not turn them off. They are being turned off, but not by me. THAT is the problem I am reporting, and I would appreciate a resolution, not just a statement of the obvious. Thanks.

    Hi Ernesto,

I definitely understand your frustration. As you mentioned, it seems like this happened two months ago and then four months ago as well. I’m not sure how the “Block all email updates…” option become checked at the moment. However, if you uncheck it, you should begin receiving updates again.

I’ll continue to dig so we can find out why this might be occurring!

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes. I knew to turn it back on. That’s what I’ve had to do in the past. I suspect that it is someone (not me) turning it off. I really would appreciate getting to the bottom of this so we can stop this from recurring. Thanks.

I definitely want to get to the bottom of this as well. Still digging around!

Well, it happened once again. This time, however, I checked my settings for my notifications, and it was NOT turned off; yet I still didn’t get my notification when my article posted.

    Hi Ernesto,

It looks like the setting for “Block all notifications” is indeed checked here:

    https://wordpress.com/settings/notifications/

Can you check again to confirm on your side?

  • Unknown's avatar

It was not that way before I filed this report. I know because I checked.

By the way, I checked it from the “Blogs I Follow” page. Since I “follow” my own blog, this is where I would expect to have control of the notifications that I get; this is not the page you referred me to. So, now my question is: how many places to I have to go to ensure the proper settings? In my opinion, there should only be one place.

And again, who is making these changes without my knowledge?

    Hi Ernesto,

There are two main notification controls at WordPress.com – a blog-level and system-wide level.

Your blog level settings are managed on the page you mention (Blogs I Follow) here:

    https://wordpress.com/following/edit/

From that page, you can click on each individual blog and choose how often you get notified of new posts.

The system-wide setting overrides the blog-level settings. So, if you set the system-wide setting to not deliver any emails, you won’t receive emails even if you have it setup correctly within the blog-level settings. Does that make sense?

Your system-level settings can be found here:

    https://wordpress.com/settings/notifications/

It looks like you have unchecked the option for “Blog all notifications” so you should begin receiving email notifications for new posts.

And again, who is making these changes without my knowledge?

It looks like the “Block all emails” setting was checked on 7/28/14.

At the bottom of every subscription email you receive from WordPress.com, you’ll see an option to “Manage Subscriptions”. The link will look like this:

    Screen Shot 2014 08 11 at 4 59 50 PM

If you click that link, you’re brought to a page like this:

    Status

From that page, you can also block all emails from WordPress.com. Our logs indicate that this page (the subscribe.wordpress.com) is where the setting was checked.

Do you remember potentially visiting this page?

  • Unknown's avatar

No, the subscribe page did not look familiar.

Is it possible that someone else that subscribes to my blog could have done something to effect the change? I don’t know; I’m just asking. It just seems strange that the settings would change without me knowing about it.

    Hey Ernesto,

If a subscriber of yours changed their own notification settings, that should not affect your own. It looks like everything is setup for you to receive notifications now. Let’s make sure you receive them for your next post. Can you let me know after that is published?

  • Unknown's avatar

    We’ll see what happens.

However, this has happened before, and we corrected the problem for awhile, but it cropped up again.

I will let you know what happens.

    Thanks

Great Ernesto! Please let me know if you receive a notification for your next post.
