Not receiving activation email

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello!

I set up a WordPress site last night (as part of a course I am doing) and have not received an activation email. I have tried to resend it several times and have also used the link here https://wordpress.com/support/contact/

I have verified that the email address is correct and doesn’t include any typos and I am receiving other emails to that email address. I have also checked the junk folder and other non-inbox folders. I have contacted the university who are running the course to see if there is an issue with their server blocking the activation emails but they don’t believe the issue is at their end as I am receiving other emails and they do not block emails from WordPress.

Please could someone help as I need to be able to activate and publish this site as part of my course!

    Thanks,

    Michelle

Also I have just received the email about this support thread to the email address registered with the site so they can definitely come through!

  • Hi there!

I had a look at our logs and the emails we’re trying to send you bounce. This is the error we see, in case you want to reach out to your email host:

response: host eu-smtp-inbound-2.mimecast.com[195.130.217.241] said: 554 Email rejected due to security policies – https://community.mimecast.com/docs/DOC-1369#554 [rIjDC2mdOqeKm2Q2KETjfw.uk240] (in reply to end of DATA command)

If they can’t solve this for you, you can try changing the email on your account to another one to make sure you receive all the notifications.

    Hi!

Thank you so much for your help – I will raise that with the university IT department and see if they are able to resolve it for me.

If I change the email to another one in order to activate the account, and then change it back will I need to go through the activation process again?

  • If you change the email address on the account you need access to the current email address in order to confirm the change. If that email is with the university system then you would likely need their help for every email we send to that address. It can be a pain. Most people opt to use a private address for that reason.

Yes, that makes sense – also I’m keen to keep everything associated with this course confined to that email. I will wait to hear back from the university. It seems odd when setting up this blog is a requirement of the course! Also frustrating as I use WordPress extensively at work and can’t even get past authentication on my course!!

Strangely I have been receiving notifications of posts from this support forum via the university email though.

  • Hi there,

Keep us updated on what you hear from the IT department. Yes, I see from our end that the emails from the forums are getting through. From our records, it does not appear we have had any issues with that particular university email in the past, so let us know if you find out anything.

    Thanks,

    Hello!

The response I got from the college was as follows:

“I can see the issue is that WordPress email servers did not respond to a request from Mimecast (who provide our spam filter system), so that resulted in a rejection of the emails.

I’ve added (email visible only to moderators and staff) as a permitted sender to all LTU recipients – that should prevent any future “spam” rejections of emails from WordPress.”

I have just attempted to resend the activation email so will see if it arrives shortly.

Thanks again for all your help.

  • Please let us know if you don’t see that come through in the next hour.

I didn’t receive it but I heard back from the university IT desk just know and we have managed to resolve the issues and I now have my blog activated. Thank you all for all your assistance with this.

Email from IT was as follows:
“I’ve had another look and WordPress is using some sort of dynamic email addressing, so emails are originating from @bounces.wp.com rather than from @wordpress.com in some instances.

Both domains are now permitted to send emails to us. “
