Not receiving SMS Verification: Two accounts/one phone number

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi. Can I use one phone number for SMS verification for two different WordPress accounts? I’m having trouble doing so.

I have two different WordPress accounts and two blogs (one on each account). One account I’ve had for many years. The other day I set up a new account and a new blog, and used the same phone number. I had no trouble receiving SMS codes while doing so. I was logged out of the older account/blog at the time.

Since then, I logged back into my older blog to check something, logged out, then tried to log back into the new one. It says it’s sending SMS codes, but I’m not getting them. I get them for the older account though now.

I’ve had to log in to the newer account with a backup code and I tried to change the password, but it sent me an SMS verification code to do so. It didn’t come in, so now I can only login to my account with backup codes, which isn’t sustainable. My password change seems stuck in limbo now and I can’t login with the old password either.

I’m receiving other SMS/texts with no problem. I’ve turned the phone off and on again and the verification texts are still not coming in. Can you please advise what to do next as I need to log in and switch between these two blogs frequently and this is a huge problem.

    Thank you.

Is anyone able to help with this issue please? Do WordPress staff still monitor these forums? This is a complex thing that I’ll need staff support with please! Thank you 🙏🏽

Bumping this post in the hope I can get some assistance from WordPress staff (or anyone who might be able to assist). Thank you.

Do staff still assist with such problems? Please help, I’ve been waiting over a week now for a reply and am unable to use both blogs at this stage. Thank you.

Hello, @theuntiedtongue! I’ll be happy to assist you with this.

If I understand correctly, you’re currently having a bit of trouble receiving SMS codes for your newer account, right? Since you can still log in using backup codes, can you try switching the two-step authentication method to use an authenticator app instead of SMS?

To do that, please log in to your newer account using a backup code, then go to your account’s security settings here:

    https://wordpress.com/me/security

From there, you can try changing the SMS method to an authenticator app like Google Authenticator or Authy.

If you run into any issues or if you’re unable to make the change, just send us an email from the address connected to your newer account at help@wordpress.com, and we’d be happy to assist you further.

Hi, thank you for the reply, much appreciated. I’ll try to do that, but won’t I need to be able to receive an SMS verification code in order to change the 2FA method? Just checking. Thanks for the email address too in case of further issues.

Apologies @elcristofue I forgot to tag you in my reply above.

May I ask another favour please @elcristofue? Are you able to please remove the name of my older blog from my initial post? I have privacy concerns and had hoped to be able to delete this information later on, but am not sure I can. I’d appreciate if you could remove references to my other blog if at all possible. Thank you! 😊

    Hello again, @theuntiedtongue!

Sure thing, I’ve removed the name of your older blog as requested. 😊

Regarding your initial request, I just wanted to double-check if you were able to switch the SMS method to using an authenticator app instead?

If you still need help with this, just let me know and I’ll be happy to help you further!

Hi @elcristofue and thanks for getting back to me again. Much appreciated. I have been very busy with work today and didn’t get a chance to try to change the 2FA on the new blog. I will try tomorrow and let you know of any issues. Thanks for checking in and the offer of help! I’ll let you know how it goes. 😊

Hi @elcristofue. Interestingly, I’ve been able to log back into both accounts and get SMS verification codes again today. This is good, but would it be better/safer to put authy on the new account instead, in case this problem happens again? What would you recommend? Thanks 🙏🏽

  • Unknown's avatar

Oh, I’m glad to hear the issue is resolved! 🙌

If everything’s working correctly now, you can leave it as is, and you shouldn’t encounter any problems.

Personally, I prefer using the app method since I find it a bit quicker, but of course, it really depends on what works best for you. 😊

If you ever run into a similar issue again, just let us know and I’ll be happy to take a closer look.

Thanks @elcristofue. Fingers crossed it stays this way. Is it normally ok to have two accounts linked to the one number? I’ll certainly know to swap to the authy app if I have any future problems. I might even do that for peace of mind. Thanks for all your help. ☺️

    Hello again, @theuntiedtongue!

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. You shouldn’t run into any issues using the same phone number for Two-Step Authentication on different accounts, so you can leave it as it is.

That said, if you’d prefer to switch to the app method instead, you’re welcome to do that too. Whatever works best for you! ☺️

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or need a hand with anything else. We’re always happy to help.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks @elcristofue, I’ve been swapping between both now for the last couple of days without any issues. Fingers crossed it stays this way! Thanks for all your help. I’ll let you know if any other problems emerge.

Ooh, so good to hear that, @theuntiedtongue! It’s possible that what you encountered earlier was just a temporary issue. You shouldn’t run into any problems from now on, but if you do, we’ll be right here to help. 🙌

Since everything is working great, I’ll go ahead and close this thread for now.

Wishing you a wonderful rest of your day! ☺️
