Not Sure How to Add New Menu Items Where I Want Them
-
I spent a number of hours a few days ago with my WordPress website, trying to find/add something that used to be fairly easy to do.
Unfortunately, since some changes were made, I can no longer figure out how to change the order of items in my top menu.
Shoot, no matter what I do, I can’t even find a ‘Dashboard’ setting anymore.
I tried making new Widgets, but that didn’t seem to work.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi there,
Here’s how to change the order of items on the top menu: My Sites -> Design -> Customize -> Widgets -> Menus. Once there, you want to select the correct menu e.g Primary menu, then drag the items in your preferred order. There’s also an option to Create New Menu:
The guide is on this link:
All the best

The link above seemed to refer to the menu widget.
For changing the order of the top menu items I found this link useful:
Click My Site(s), then Customize.
In the Customizer, click the Menus tab.
If your theme already has a default/primary menu, you can click on it to begin editing. And this section gets into the actual changing the order:
-
Thanks so much, both of you! Upon going there, it tells me I don’t have any menus yet (and I thought that was what all of my headers were).
Here is what my website looks like, and what I thought were menus were the various pages at the top
[I tried to drop a picture of my website here, but that doesn’t seem to work]
I don’t get the ‘reorder’ button appearing for me. :(

it tells me I don’t have any menus yet (and I thought that was what all of my headers were).
You’ll first want to create a menu by following the instructions on here.
Once the menu is created and items are added to it, you’ll then be able to reorder them.
Visitors to your site can see a navigational menu, the items are probably added automatically by your theme as you create pages but the reason it’s saying you don’t have any menus yet is most likely because you haven’t created a menu yet.
So, try making a menu – you’re on the right track and let us know how it goes.
All the best!

Thanks for being so patient and helpful.
Somehow I’m not communicating this very well. What I’ve been trying to do is to add (and reorder) the little drop-down selections (for the pages on my site). I thought these were called “menus”, but apparantly they’re not (as it is still saying I don’t have any menus yet).
I USED to be able to easily reorder these, but since a recent change to wordpress, I am no longer able to.
-
So is anyone able to help me with this? I still have my original question (I guess they’re technically NOT menus, but I don’t know what to call them!)
-
I do find this section on page order that I think will sort it out, but do not have practical experience with it.
Check this out:

Give us feedback if this works for you. I am also marking this for modlook so you can get a definitive answer.

Howdy –
Looking at the back end of the site I can see the items in question are a menu. Try to see if you can reorganize them as desired from this view:

houstonweaver, I’m able to go to ‘Site’ and then ‘Pages’, but I am not able to find an ‘About’ anywhere, like the link says.
-
lizkarkoski, that seems like a way to finally get somewhere, but even with this it is saying that they are added, but I don’t see them anywhere.

Hi there,
You have created two menus. One named Vindicators and the other World Watch. The first one is set as your primary menu and it is displayed on your site. The second one has no items added yet.
Can you please let me know what items are you trying to add on which menu so I can better assist you?
-
Thank you, fstat.
First off, those two menus (one named Vindicators and the other named World Watch) are the two new menus I am trying to add to the others.
You say that they are displayed on my site, but when I go to my site, I do not see them anywhere. I tried both when I was logged in, and when I wasn’t.
-
Just to be clear, we need to differentiate between menus and menu items. “Menu” refers to the entire navigation bar, listing the different pages or links, i.e. menu items.
You have a menu on your site titled “Vindicators”. that is the menu currently at the top of your site, containing the menu items, “Home”, “Campaign Summary”, “Timeline”, etc.
It sounds like you’re actually just trying to add some new items to that menu, but instead you created a completely new menu.
Go to My Site ->Design ->Customize ->Menus and click on Vindicators. Then click the Add Items button to add more menu items to that existing menu.

-
I can confirm I now see the World Watch and Vindicators items in your menu.
Happy to help :)

Though I was able to get this to work on THIS site, I am still having trouble adding a page on my OTHER site. On that one, I follow your same instructions (“Go to My Site ->Design ->Customize ->Menus”), but it tells me (just like it did with this one) that I don’t have any Menus yet.
The big question I STILL HAVE is how to simply ADD MENU ITEMS, and then how do I REORGANIZE THEM into the order I want?
I sure do appreciate the help, but it sure is frustrating how difficult wordpress has made this, when it used to be so very simple to do!
-
What is the URL of the other site? Are you speaking of https://deathoflibertycampaign.wordpress.com/?
That site is using the default menu – many themes automatically create a menu using all published pages on the site, and use that if you don’t set a custom menu. Any new page you publish should be added to that menu automatically, but you can’t easily re-order it, or add stuff like outside links to the menu.
To directly control the menu, you’ll have to create a new custom menu first, and then add the menu items you want to it. Then you can drag-and-drop the items in the order you want them. Lastly, set that menu as the primary menu, and it will replace the default menu on the site:
-
That is indeed the site!
I seem to have been able to do it. Hopefully, now that I’ve created these new custom menus, it will be easy enough to add new pages and then hopefully it will be fairly simple to reorder them if I need to do so.
One last question, if I decide, let’s say after I’ve added a bunch of new menu items, that I want certain ones to be in the first (top) row, and others to be in a second row beneath that, is there a way to do that? Or is that dependent on what type of screen someone is viewing the site on?
Thanks again so much for all of your help!
