Hey there,
Many thanks for reaching out.
I’m at a point that I should decide to give it it’s owe WP space or change the name of the current WP blog I am working on
It’s totally possible to change the domain, which can be done via upgrades > Domains. At a minimum, you would need the personal plan in order to change the primary custom domain.
Is there a domain you’d like to make use of, or have in mind?
Also, if you’re looking to get more from the space, I can recommend this guide here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/grow-your-community/ on how best to build your following.
I hope this is all useful information.

hi
I’m still a bit confused. both sites I have are free WP.com sites – I figure I’ll grab the domain when ready to push the book, at the rate I’ve been going, well, hope by summer, but maybe next winter.
Regardless I want to change the name on the current site everything is on OR move it all over to the one I have with the proper name, separate from any connection to my current site.
If I change the current name on the blog I am using, I need to read about how to do that.
If I move all the files and pages to the other WP.com with the correct name, how hard is that?
Eventually, I will get the domain, but I want to move or change what I can now – just in case it takes off and figure out how to actually move the whole thing or change the name?
does that make sense?
thanks

Hey there,

Ok, so to check – do you wish to change the URL https://spqrius.wordpress.com/ to something else? If yes, this can be done as per these steps here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-site-address/
Please not that once changed, this can not be reversed – so if this address has any intrinsic value, then I’d suggest creating a new site here, creating a desired name.
If I move all the files and pages to the other WP.com with the correct name, how hard is that?
If you wish to move content from one site to another, it’s very simple. :)
You would need to export the content as per these steps (https://en.support.wordpress.com/export/) and then import into the other site as per these steps (https://en.support.wordpress.com/import/)
I hope this helps. :)

thank you, I will read it all of that carefully and decide which is best.
My biggest concern are he file links. I have been backing up the pages in html, pdf and text.
but there are links, most uploaded pics to the media files on the spqr site.
- If I change the name of the blog, what happens to all the uploaded media pics – both in the WP file folder and links posted on the page – i.e. URL: http : // spqrius. wordpress . com / 2018 / 09 / school.jpg
will this change automatically to http : // newname. wordpress . com / 2018 / 09 / school.jpg ?
or d I need to reupload them?
——-
2. If I move everything to the new name site will those links stay at spqrius / wordpress blahblahblah /school.jpg or can I import all the files to take on the new site auto.
Even though I have full html back ups, links to pics seems to be the biggest challenge unless there is a tool that will move and adjust this automatically.
—
If I have to do it all by hand, I’ll probably move it all page by page to the other WP site.
If I end up doing that, I should also rethink the template, not sure WP even uses the one I have on spqrius anymore, I’m almost certain no one likes how I html.
Lot of foundational decisions to be made before I dive in, and I still have 3 to 4 months to go on finishing the book, plus the Edit. But this will have to be done, and no one works for me for free, but me.

Hi there,
If I change the name of the blog, what happens to all the uploaded media pics… Even though I have full html back ups, links to pics seems to be the biggest challenge unless there is a tool that will move and adjust this automatically.
Just to be sure I understood, you are asking if you will need to do any manual migration or fixing of links to change from one address to another? If so the answer is “no” since we handle everything for you automatically.
If you change your site address from spqrius.wordpress.com to somethingelse.wordpress.com we will automatically update all media URLs and page/post links. Essentially you don’t have to move anything, we handle all that for you. You will have a site that looks exactly the same and has no changes, the only difference is the URL (address) the site displays at.
As mentioned above though, you will want to be very sure that you will not need spqrius.wordpress.com again as an address. Once you change a site address, it cannot be recovered by staff.
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

WOW! that sounds fantastic!
Now I have to decide….
But just to be clear on a few things. If I grab the domain on WP for the book [not spqrius] and ask WP to move say 90% the pages from spqrius to this newname WP domain site, will this al be done automatically?
Also, what if I want to use a different template for the new site, will that work?
Can I still leave everything that is now on spqrius as is? I would hate to lose the history that has been there since 2018. Will I lose the history if I make the bookpages private?
provided this works out, I think I am ready to get started.
What should I do first?
Do I contact someone at WP?
thanks

Hi again,
But just to be clear on a few things. If I grab the domain on WP for the book [not spqrius] and ask WP to move say 90% the pages from spqrius to this newname WP domain site, will this al be done automatically?
I think it will help if I clarify that nothing actually “moves” when you change your WordPress.com site address. Everything stays exactly where it is. We just change the address the site uses and update all the page links.
Also, what if I want to use a different template for the new site, will that work?
It won’t be a new site. It will be the same site, just at a different address. You are welcome to change your theme any time you wish, now or after the address change.
Can I still leave everything that is now on spqrius as is? I would hate to lose the history that has been there since 2018.
No you will not be able to leave a copy of the old site behind, again because we don’t make a copy or move any files. If you change your site address to something else, spqrius.wordpress.com will simply cease to exist at that address, and will exist at a different address instead. However, no content will be lost since as I mention, nothing really moves anywhere.
Do I contact someone at WP?
Nope you can change your site address any time you like. Again it is a permanent change (and spqrius.wordpress.com will cease to exist) so you will want to be double-triple-sure you want to make the change.
You can change your address here, just type in the new address you want your site to use, and as long as it’s available in our system you will be able to use it: https://wordpress.com/domains/manage/spqrius.wordpress.com
On that page you will see a grey bar that says “Your free WordPress.com address is spqrius.wordpress.com” and at the end of the bar is a “…” icon. Click on that and you will see a box you can type your new name into.
Hope this helps!

ok we bought a new site, but it doesn’t look correct, who can I contact to discuss the details?
-
-
I knew it was too good to be true.
well, I have the site now I will have to move it al manually.
I guess I will have to think about a new template now
-
Hey there,
well, I have the site now I will have to move it al manually.
Currently, I can only see the site: http://spqrius.wordpress.com on this account.
To check, have you purchased a site in addition to this?
We can certainly help you get to the end point here. :)
-
I want to buy my domain, I saw that it costs $19 a year. If I buy this domain will I be able to use plugins or install themes?
-
okay, I Dl the export file from spqr… to my computer.
now I am ready to import it from my computer to the new site.
will it wipe out all the information on spqr… or will I have a copy on both sites?
-
I also tried to look up the template on one of those template look up sites and it says the have no idea or copy of this particular template, they think it is custom. I think it is probably just old and no longer used.
-
-
I don’t understand, I exported and imported and everything seems to be there except the template and theme – what it gave me doesn’t displays the lay outs or list any of the pages and I can’t find the theme or template in anything under Appearance. Where did it all go?
-
Think I just got bamboozled
on all of the pages the links go back to the old site. the templates/themes offer nothing compositable to what I had. I lost the layout, fonts, backgrounds, set ups, and if I want to replicate what I had, if that is even possible, I have to pay someone to do it. Feeling pretty ripped off right now and like an idiot for trusting anyone these days. Now I am stuck sitting on a useless site for the next year. Well, it’s not the dumbest thing I’ve ever done, but what an utter waste of time.

Hi there,
I see only one site under your account. You can confirm here: https://wordpress.com/sites/
What is the URL of the second site you are referring to so we can better understand your request?
I don’t understand, I exported and imported and everything seems to be there except the template and theme – what it gave me doesn’t displays the lay outs or list any of the pages and I can’t find the theme or template in anything under Appearance. Where did it all go?
As I mentioned here, if you change your site address (which is not the same as exporting/importing content) then nothing about your site will change.
However, if you export the contents of spqrius.wordpress.com to another (2nd) site that you have set up, that export will include all pages, blog posts, comments, media, etc. But it will not include your theme, the design, or the preferences you set up on spqrius.wordpress.com.
We’re happy to take a look at the second site you set up and confirm, but we were under the impression you wanted to change the address of spqrius.wordpress.com, which you can do here: https://wordpress.com/domains/manage/spqrius.wordpress.com
Thanks for the additional info!
