not sure…i messed things up!

  • Unknown's avatar

I started up a ‘test’ site to experiment with some layout ideas…somehow it affected my established blog site and totally messed it up. I have since disabled the newer test site and rebuilt the older established one…but now when I publish, the postings are not presented in the correct order…I am afraid to totally delete the test site for fear it may wipe my established blog site…very confusing…wish I could talk to someone–is that possible????

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

What are the site URLs involved?

Which is the test site and which is the “real” site?

–the established site that I do not want to mess up is:

    mk4567blog.wordpress.com

–the other site is “hidden” and I would prefer to delete it altogether:

    testblog4567blog.wordpress.com

OK-looking at your established site, the post at the top from January 4th looks to be the sticky post. I answered you about sticky posts on your other thread here: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/sticky-16?replies=2#post-2834404

It’s not necessary to delete your test site, however, testblog4567blog.wordpress.com is not hidden. It is currently visible to the public. If you wish to remove it from Public view, you can change your privacy settings here to make it Private. https://wordpress.com/settings/general/testblog4567blog.wordpress.com Scroll down a bit until you see PRIVACY and change the site to

    Private
Your site is only visible to you and users you approve.”

    Remember to save your settings.

Let me know if you need more help with any of that.

justjennifer: first of all, thank you for taking the time to steer me straight. You have been a big help since wordpress hasn’t always been friendly to my feeble way of trying to figure things out. That said, I will take advantage of you and ask if you can answer the following for me please:
    1. I might like to keep the test site to use it as a practice area to develop ways to improve and expand my established site…but doing exactly that is what caused havoc to my established site. I don’t want to go through that again. Is there a way to keep the two totally separate?
    2. If I can’t keep them separate while I experiment with the test site, can I delete the test site without screw’n up the established one?
Again, thanks very much for your help…

You’re welcome. It really isn’t necessary to delete your test site. First make it Private and then add a site title like My TEST Site with TEST in all caps to visually differentiate it. Posting on one site doesn’t change anything on the other. Sometimes mix ups happen when you have more than one site and you think you are on one site but actually are on the other. (I accidentally did this the other day and one of my readers was kind enough to point it out.)

Having said that, deleting the test site (and make sure that it is that site you are deleting!) should not have any effect on your established site. The deletion process requires that you enter the URL of the site you are deleting in order to prevent errors, but they do sometimes happen. The thing is that if you delete the incorrect site, it can’t be recovered.

If you want to separate the two sites, you would need to open a new WordPressdotcom account with an entirely different email address and then transfer the test site from your existing account to the new account. Let me know if you want more info on that.

I’m also going to leave this link here for you: https://dailypost.wordpress.com/2016/01/14/help-with-wordpress-com/ which really gives you a shoe-in when you need to find an answer in a hurry. :)

Thank you Jennifer…I feel safe now, knowing I have you just a click away. BTW, being the cheapy kind of guy I am, I use the basic free theme platform that WordPress supplies. If you know of any others like me who have done impressive things with their sites, I would appreciate your passing them along. While the free themes are restrictive, I like to maneuver around them as much as possible if it makes the site look better…okay, I’ve taken enough of your. You made me feel a bit better today given I live just a few minutes from yesterday’s fiasco at Fort Lauderdale Airport….
