Nothing appears when I add a widget to Left, Right, or Middle Home

I cannot find any definition of what these areas are supposed to be used for but even on another of my sites I have never been able to use the Left Home, Right Home, or Middle Home. I add any type of widget and zero effect. Can anyone tell me if they are good for anything or why they are even there?

Those labels are misleading: they don’t refer to your homepage in the general sense, they refer to the optional “Home” template of the theme. See theme instructions and demo:

Responsive theme has a special front page template where there is space for three widgets. Set your front page as static and choose a page for your blog.

Make sure you choose the “home page template” for your front page.

Responsive offers a number of page layouts: a full-width page; split 50/50 content/sidebar layouts with either the the sidebar to the right or the left of the content; and a landing page template without a sidebar.

You can have featured content plus image on the home page template at the top. The home widgets will show below.
