Nothing works properly

I have had a domain set up with WordPress since Xmas last year. I have had 3 or 4 cracks at trying to set up my website. Each time to NO AVAIL. I have spent a good 8 hours trying to set up my site today, but still cannot get any features to work properly.
All i want is a simple (read plain) homepage, with the facility to put 4 photos in the middle, each one which will direct to a gallery of photography. Also a header, and some options such as (About me, blog (with a link to my blog), galleries (with a drop down with secondary clickable links to each gallery) and a contact me option)
I am running Minimatica theme, which I like, but cannot get it to look like the sample picture.
Is there anyone out there that can offer me any advice? I have tried youtube tutorials, and various searches on the interweb.
