Notification bar blocking web content
-
As of a few days ago, the right hand side notification bar (bell icon) has been blocking website content, but only when I’m logged in to my WordPress account. I cannot close it by clicking the bell again, it just opens yet another notification bar. Super frustrating when I’m trying to see what a page looks like while I’m editing. I’ve had to use a separate browser to view the website logged out and one browser to make edits when I’m logged in. Doesn’t seem that I can contact WP support directly, so hopefully someone here has a suggestion or solution! Thanks.

Here’s a screenshot of what I’m seeing, minus the notification text that I’ve covered up. This is happening on any browser I log in on and view my website.

It almost sounds like a browser-related issue, as I don’t experience it in my WordPress.com account. Have you already tried clearing your browser’s cache and cookies and/or restarting your computer?
You can refer to the guide here: https://wordpress.com/support/browser-issues/
You can also try if disabling browser notifications will help. There’s a guide here: https://wordpress.com/support/notifications/browser-notifications/

Thank you, @jojovillanueva12! Yes, likely browser-related I guess. I have cleared cache and cookies, restarted, and browser notifications are already turned off. The pop-up window is still visible on most WordPress pages, even this support page. I’ve tried four browsers, with and without browser extensions. It still happens when I’m logged in on DuckDuckGo (default browser) and Safari, but not on Firefox or Chrome. It doesn’t happen on any browser if I’m not logged in, of course. I suppose I could just use Firefox or Chrome when editing. That doesn’t totally solve the issue, but is a decent work around for the time being.

I have been having a similar problem, as of about 1 week ago. If I click the Bell icon (Manage your Notifications) the bell goes black inside a white square, but fails to show notifications in any wordpress.com window, except if I click the My Profile icon and then from the My Profile page the Bell icon (Manage your Notifications) I can see all my notifications, but only via the My Profile page.
I am using Firefox.

@haleyrpope Duckduckgo isn’t amongst the supported browsers – https://wordpress.com/support/browser-issues/#supported-browsers
-
@staartmees – haleyrpope did not say that she was using Duckduckgo exclusively and I’m sure WP is supported in Safari. I don’t really understand how your response is in anyway helpful.
-
Thanks for the responses. I haven’t found a solution for this blip other than to use Firefox or Chrome for edits so the notification window doesn’t block my view. Strange that it’s happening in Firefox for you @maddogtvdinners and yet you’re not seeing any notifications at all…
I realize that DDG isn’t supported (hopefully it will be one day!), but Safari is and the same things happens for me in Safari, even after I’ve cleared cache, cookies, restarted, disabled notifications, etc. If anyone can think of any other ideas, thank you!

WP are constantly tinkering to “improve” our experience, which often results in problems. I am sure this is one of those “improvements”!

I have just noticed something different. On my stats page the “Manage your Notifications” window completely refuses to load. However, on a friend’s WP site the “Manage your Notifications” window opens but none of the notifications load (https://thekitchensgarden.com/2024/01/06/look-what-snow-feels-like-before-it-falls/). On another friend’s WP site (https://backroadjournal.wordpress.com/2024/01/06/four-cheese-bechamel-lasagna-italian-comfort-food/) the “Manage your Notifications” does nothing, just like my site.
I am convinced that the issue is with WP.

Hey, @haleyrpope! 👋🏻
I tried reproducing the issue on the DuckDuckGo and Safari browsers, but everything went well.
💡 Here’s a screen recording of the DuckDuckGo browser:

Hi @dragstor Thank you for those screen recordings and links. I just checked today myself and the issue seems to have resolved on its own–Imagine that! The bell icon now responds when I click to open or close the notification panel, also with full protections and VPN on. Maybe it was a recent DDG browser or WP update…?
Hopefully things will resolve themselves on your sites too, @maddogtvdinners.
Thanks for the discussion and tips, everyone.

My Notification Bar started working again today. I have changed nothing on my computer – I am convinced this was a WP problem.

I wrote a comment here the other day about the notification bar blocking the view of my page. Someone responded and tagged the moderator, but the comment is deleted. The problem has not been resolved.

Hi @stephiemoni,
your comment was not deleted; it was split, and a new thread was created with your request. You can find it here: https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/split-notification-bar-blocking-web-content/?view=allAnother staff member asked you a couple of questions to troubleshoot your issue. You can check them there.
Thanks!
