Notification history missing

  • Unknown's avatar

Quite often I don’t get the e-mails notifying me of comments and likes etc. on my blog so I rely on the feature on the site (the little bell in the top right hand corner). This is handy for connecting with other sites when I need to reference something in retrospect.

But this morning the entire history has been wiped out and I have is the sole comment I received today. I have it set to “All” as usual, and haven’t changed anything so is this a bug or a new feature in WP?

    Thanks in advance.

When we need Staff help with issues Volunteers cannot resolve like this one we type modlook into the sidebar tags on our forum threads. I did that for you. How do I get a Moderator/Staff reply for my question? https://en.support.wordpress.com/getting-help-in-the-forums/#how-do-i-get-a-moderatorstaff-reply-for-my-question Then we subscribe to this thread so we are notified when they respond. • Hi there,

I have no idea why this would have happened, but am following up with our developers to see if they know anything. I’ll let you know once I know more.

As for not getting the emails, next time you receive a notification for which you think you should be receiving an email as well, can you please let us know here, specifying the exact notification? Then we can take a look at that as well.

    Thanks guys!

For the record, the notification list has continued today on my site with yesterday’s (Monday) notices still there so it seems to have somehow reset itself on Sunday night.

The e-mails I get often refer to someone replying to a comment I have made on another blog which is the only way I know a conversation has continued. To wit
I posted this comment on another site but only got the e-mail saying he liked it, not that he replied.

    Thanks.

  • I’ve heard back from a developer, and they’ve confirmed the notifications database for your account is empty except for the ones showing now, but we don’t record specifically what removes a record from that database. A comment being deleted will make the notification for that comment to disappear, though, and deleting a post that generated notifications for multiple likes, comments and comment likes would cause them all to disappear at once.

At any time we only store the 100 most recent notifications, and if notifications get removed in this way we don’t then go and retrieve older notifications but only start adding new ones. So that is one explanation for what could have happened here.

It does appear that you deleted some comments from your site, though not so many to explain all your notifications going missing. But it could be that some content was also removed from other sites. It also could be a one-time glitch – I know that’s not the answer you want to hear, but based on the information we have those are the options.

    To wit
I posted this comment on another site but only got the e-mail saying he liked it, not that he replied.

That is normal. If you comment on someone else’s blog, you will only receive an email notification of replies if you also subscribe to comments on that post, and looking at your current subscriptions you’re not following comments for that post, or that site as a whole.

Comment like notifications fall under your account settings, and is not tied to any particular site.

    Hi Kokkieh

Thanks so much for looking into this for me.

I wasn’t aware about the 100 post limit as I’m simply used to seeing it full on a daily basis. With this in mind I *think* I might have an explanation which you can confirm or deny, which is on Sunday afternoon one of my followers went on a “liking” spree and “liked” 33 of my posts in succession. Perhaps this moved the total of notifications to the 100 a lot quicker than normal and caused the reboot on Sunday night?

Also, I’ve never deleted a post or a comment but I do “trash” pingbacks where I’ve linked to one of my own posts in a new article as it allows me too, which might be the deletions you have on record.

Finally, thanks for clarifying how the notifications work with regard to comments on another blog, something else I didn’t know.

I appreciate your efforts in assisting me with this matter so many thanks again! :-)
