Notifications dropdown refuses to load (stays blank)
-
For the past few weeks the Notifications dropdown (bell icon) has refused to load; it remains blank with the neverending rotating blue circle. I have changed nothing in my Notifications Settings since the last time that the dropdown loaded properly.
Browser is Firefox 50.0 and I have 3 plugins by default: NoScript which is disabled when on wordpress.com, Ghostery, and AdBlock Plus. I’ve used all three for years with no functionality issues re: this blog. If something has changed recently in the coding for the Notifications dropdown, it would help to know what it is so that I can see if by chance either Ghostery or AdBlock may be preventing it from loading. Nothing in their block lists seems to match up, but you never know.
Any suggestions as to how to make the Notifications dropdown load again? or why it recently stopped doing so? I have two other blogs on WordPress.com and all three are having this same problem.
Thanks!

This is either connectivity issue or a browser related issue.
Make sure you are running an up to date browser version found at https://browsehappy.com
Try clearing your browser cache https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache
Read all the tips here https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/

that’s brutal truth. But I learn again. I am sorry you had to correct me again. I won’t repeat the mistake.
Thanks a lot.

@rambogenius
Sorry if I came across as “witchy” but I’m a very plain speaking person. Know that curiosity and determination to find a correct answer via searching is characteristic of anyone who does a good job when it comes to providing support. The third characteristic is failing to post unless one has searched everywhere and is convinced they either (1) they have a correct answer or (2) they need to leave the thread for another experienced Volunteer to answer. Hang in there. Yes, it’s difficult at first but id you stick to it soon you will be adept at searching and knowing when to back away. Best wishes. :) -
I actually do subscribe to many threads and learn from staff answers and you.
No I never think a helpful person like you can be witchy or anything like that.
Btw apart from onecoolsite, is there a page for your audios too? I read that you sing. I try to write songs too. :P
Yes, I will be here.

Good and no.

@thechatsworthlady I’d also recommend temporarily disabling the plugins to see if that makes a difference. You could also try a different browser: if it works in one but not the other that will help narrow this down.

@supernovia and @timethief,
I just updated my Firefox from 50.0 to the most current, which is 53.0.2 but the problem persists.
Tried disabling the AdBlockPlus, Ghostery, and NoScript one by one….but the problem persists.
Unfortunately Firefox is the only browser on this laptop, and this laptop is the only device I use to access the internet (no tablet or smartphone.)
This laptop is running Windows 7, SP1, which is kept up to date. The only other device that I have access to is a spare laptop running Linux (Ubunto Xenial Xerus, with Firefox as the browser there also) but for WordPress purposes it’s useless because all of my necessary files are on the Windows machine. :-(
All of the other features on my WP blog sites are working normally (knock wood, LOL) except for the notifications (bell icon) dropdown. I suppose I could simply pretend it doesn’t exist and just ignore the little orange dot that is telling me there’s an interaction there.
One thing I did notice is that the dropdown stopped working not long after the display format of the Reader changed. No idea if the two functions are related. The Reader does work (although I liked the previous display format better) but the bell-icon dropdown no longer does.
Is there any other method by which to access whatever notifications are supposed to display in the bell-icon dropdown? some sort of backdoor location maybe? Thanks!

Sorry, forgot to also mention that I did try clearing the browser cache manually, even though I have Firefox set to automatically clear the cache at each exit. No effect on the Notifications dropdown issue.
It is a Dell laptop, by the way — don’t know if that is relevant but just as an FYI.

Okay, I just discovered a weird “workaround” that does result in the Notifications dropdown working properly:
If I click on the Reader FIRST, and then after the posts from my followed blogs appear, THEN click on the bell icon…. voila! The dropdown loads properly.
However, if I do not first click on the Reader, the dropdown will not load at all. (the Reader is not, and never has been, my default page upon login; nor do I want it to be)
In the past, the Notifications dropdown would load whenever I clicked on it, regardless of whether I first viewed the Reader or not. In fact I usually look at the Reader as the very last thing I do, because what I’m logging in for is to either post or to edit a post. But apparantly now the Notifications dropdown will not work unless I first view the posts in the Reader.
Apparantly the dropdown is now dependent in some mysterious way on the Reader. Rather a PITA but if that’s the only way it will work… *sigh*
So, is this new relationship between Reader and Notifications a bug, or a feature? ;-)

@thechatsworthlady
That’s fabulous news! Thanks so much for sharing it here. I’ve bookmarked it. :)

the drop down loads but just doesn’t let me reply, like, follow and etc… Tried the reader way too. drop down loads but from then on can’t do anything. I’ve tried both browsers Internet Explorer and Google Chrome. I sent the version last night but don’t know if it’s the latest version. Do You? Here is what I’m running. 1. Operariong System: Windows 10 2. Screen Resolution: 1366×768 3. Web Browser: Chrome 58.03029.96 4. Color Depth: 24 5. Javascript: Enabled 6. Flash Version: Not Enabled 7. Cookies: Enabled and 8. User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/58.0.3029.96 Safari/537.36. Hope this helps. Looked at the links. caches were cleared. Don’t know what’s the problem.

Sorry but I only use Firefox and am blissfully clueless about the intricacies of Google Chrome and IE. :-) It seems that your problem has different roots than mine did, possibly because your browsers and also your OS are different than what I’m using.
I’m going to mark this as issue as resolved because I did figure out a workaround for the Firefox/Win7 setup, even though the dropdown might not be behaving as the site coders intended. As long as I can make it work (channeling Tim Gunn, lol) that’s good enough for me. :-)
-
Is there anyone that knows about Google Chrome? Right now, I’m taking timethief’s suggestion and so far it’s working but doesn’t really have to do with my notifications. If you can’t get someone who knows Chrome, I’ll have to mark this staff and modlook. Good luck.

Daisymae2017, hoping you can get this fixed. I cannot and I’ve done several searchings and clearings and I am not going to even post another post til I can answer comments. This is very frustrating. I found this thread via another help thread.
-
How not fun! I found out if I look at the drop down notifications to find out what the comments say and where it came from, I can circumvent going to the actual blog of the person by scrolling thru all the posts on my reader list to find which one was commented on. (that was a run on sentence, sorry)Then, I can comment there. Unfortunately, it is still very cumbersome. Some people don’t always comment in order of posts written and with some I still need to go to the manage my blog and look for the blog. Makes me want to ditch the whole wordpress site, but I know this glitch will be fixed eventually!
-
Agreed. My notifications will pile up until fixed. Can we say really frustrating. Please share when you get this fixed and how you did it.

#daisymae2017 and @krisegbert,
Not to be nitpicky, but this thread (I’m the OP) describes a problem which is different from what both of you are experiencing. If I’m reading your posts correctly, both of you are able to at least see the comments, likes, etc. in the Notifications/bell icon dropdown menu…. but are having problems interacting with those entries. The problem that I started this thread about was that the dropdown was not populating with anything at all: It was just a blank white space in which the small blue circle kept spinning forever with no results.
Because, as the OP, I’ve already marked this thread/issue as Resolved (because the problem that I was having is now resolved, via a workaround) I doubt that a MODLOOK or STAFF tag would help. It would probably be more productive to use those tags on @daisymae2017’s thread rather than this one (would also avoid possible confusion as well.) :-)
-
thechatsworthlady, I am so sorry. I’m glad her original issue is resolved. I’ll continue to search for an answer elsewhere for mine. Thank you for your help.
