Hi there,
Are there specific notifications that you know you haven’t received? (For example, a comment, like, or follow that you didn’t get a notification for?) If you can give me some specific examples of things that you didn’t get notifications for, that will help me investigate it for you. :)
-
All of them…haven’t worked for a week or so. I can see they are getting likes via the dashboard/posts page but not on any page with the pop up “bell”.
-
Can you give me a specific example (such as a link to a post with likes you didn’t get notifications for) so I can take a closer look?
-
-
Thanks for those screenshots. Would you mind if I temporarily changed the “Show likes” setting on your most recent post so I can get a better look at the new likes you received there?
-
-
Thanks! I tracked down what’s going on. Our team made an update to disable notifications about likes on your posts as long as you’ve disabled likes on the post. You can re-enable those notifications by editing the post and selecting the “Show likes” option there.
Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

So, in other words….If I have “likes” hidden from the public…they won’t show up in my notifications as well? It seems that subscribers are not showing up in the notifications as well. Along with my websites no longer informing me that I am “getting lots of traffic”.
If I am reading this right, if I , for privacy reasons, don’t want people’s “likes” to show up to the public….I can’t be informed via my private notifications panel? and can’t be informed of any other activity going on through this blog or any other site I have connected to WP? -
If you don’t show likes on your posts, it also doesn’t show the like button directly on your posts so visitors can’t “like” you posts there. The expectation is that when you disable likes there, you aren’t interested in using that feature and you’d rather not hear about any likes that you get from other sources (such as in the WordPress.com Reader).
That said, it sounds like you’re using likes in a way that we didn’t expect, and I’d like to try to understand that better so I can share that with our team. Can you describe the privacy reasons for not showing likes publicly on your posts?

That’s not linked to changes in the like settings (those settings only impact notifications about likes, not other notifications), so I’d like to investigate that separately. You can check your blog’s subscribers on your Insight page, and from what I see you’ve received notifications for those subscribers. Is there a particular subscriber that you noticed you didn’t receive a notification for? I can follow up on that.
The notification that says, “Your stats are booming!” are specifically linked to spikes in traffic on your sites, so that one is a bit less predictable than other notifications. Was there a day when you noticed a spike in traffic on one of your sites where you didn’t get that notification? If you can let me know which site and which day, I can double check that, too.

What if you have a crazy ex-wife who is stalking your page to see who you are associating with and plans on creating problems? That is one example.
It shows the last subscriber as the one in my notifications….over 14 days ago. I have no way of telling if it is allowing followers or not.
June 29 and 30 are showing large spikes in traffic at my website. Larger spikes than the last notification dating back to the 10th of June.

I am having similar problems with “likes” and “notifications”. I turn off “likes” for individual posts because I do not feel it is important for readers in general to know if someone else likes my picture or post – but I always respond to WordPress “likes” (which cannot be switched off) when I receive them, by visiting the donor site. Now I no longer know who has “liked” my posts because their origin does not appear in notifications and neither do I receive an e-mail.
-
Thanks to both of you for sharing your thoughts about those “likes” notifications. I shared your feedback with our team and they’ll keep it in mind for future changes to likes and notifications.
For now, though, disabling likes on your blog posts will turn off any notifications about likes. If you want to encourage visitors to like your posts and get notifications about those likes, you’ll need to enable (show) likes on your blog.

You can check your full list of followers on your Stats Insights page to compare it against the notifications you get. I don’t see any indication that there’s a problem with following or notifications about new followers on the site, but if you notice anything out of order please let me know.

Got it. I’m checking on that and will let you know as soon as I have more information.

Hi noir33, I asked our team to double check the notifications for spikes in your traffic. They confirmed that you haven’t missed any stats notifications — that notification is based on a spike in hourly traffic (rather than daily traffic), so it takes a lot of visitors coming in a short period of time to trigger it.

Just noticed the same thing on my blog. I turned off “likes” to all the blog posts because I was receiving “likes” from WP members that wanted to receive attention, not that they actually enjoyed/liked the blog post(s).
I wanted to know who “liked” my posts via the Notifications.
Now, I will have to turn the “likes” on for all blog posts. That is something I do NOT like.
WP should not assume anything before making changes like this one.

Still waiting on a response to my above comment. It’s been 6 days.
I’ve since turned off the “likes” again to the blog posts as I mentioned before, some of the “likes” are not genuine.
I still want notifications to indict if the blog posts are receiving likes.

Hi dandelionsalad,
Thanks for sharing your concerns. Our team is aware of the concerns about how notifications work for likes, but for now you’ll need to enable (show) likes on your blog to receive notifications about them.
This may change down the road as we work on new options for how notifications work. That’s still being discussed and developed, though, so I don’t have any solid plans or timelines for if or when these like notifications will change.

Thanks for responding, Rachel.
I’m disappointed once again with WP’s “changes”.
I will continue to disable the “likes” on blog posts because I cannot show (advertise) all these bloggers who do not genuinely enjoy/like the posts but do so only to get attention to their blogs. The same with the “Followers”. Almost all the “follows” are not interested in new posts on my blog, they just want clicks to their blogs.
