Notifications make it easy for disgusting perverts to harass people
-
I’m really upset. Today I looked at my notifications to see that a pervert liked two of my posts. Unfortunately his profile picture/gravator was of himself naked, and masturbating. I was horrified. This is not an association I want with my blog, branding, or just really anything. If he’s happy with his body and has kinks, that’s good for him. But I did not need to subjected to that imagery!
I was FURTHER horrified by the fact that I had no way to easily block him. In fact, the only thing I can apparently do is put him on the Comment Blacklist, which I’m skeptical of because it doesn’t instil confidence in me that it would also block him from liking my posts and showing up on my notifications.
Effectively, because wordpress doesn’t have a quick and easy way to report or block users, anyone with his frame of mind could easily harass others like I have been and flood our notifications with his vile profile photo. And there’s nothing I can do about it until it’s happened… and even after blocking him on the Comment Blacklist, IT STILL APPEARS IN MY NOTIFICATIONS!
I can’t CLEAR my notifications! I am so upset that I feel like pulling out my hair. I don’t want to see this when I click on notifications and yet WordPress is making it so that I will have to if I ever want to see what new notifications I have! WHAT THE ACTUAL F@*#!!!!

Have you adjusted your settings on this page https://froberrypie.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-discussion.php
Scroll down:
Gravatar Hovercards
View people’s profiles when you mouse over their GravatarsMaximum Rating
G — Suitable for all audiences
PG — Possibly offensive, usually for audiences 13 and above
R — Intended for adult audiences above 17
X — Even more mature than above -
Yes I have. But it seems that the pervert chose to indicate that their Gravator was G rated, so they can work around this setting.
-
Also note this about that gravatar:
That profile has been deleted.Have you also set up comment moderation on your site?
https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/#comment-moderation -
Also, this is not for comments in my posts. This is when I go to wordpress.com and I click on the bell icon to look at my notifications. His picture shows up automatically, and will only get buried with time as other people like and look at my posts. There is no way to clear those notifications or block him.
-
Not to worry as you tagged this thread for Staff and they will take care of this as soon as they can.
-
Great, I’m glad his profile has been deleted. I’m still seeing his disgusting picture in my notifications RIGHT NOW.
-
Thanks, timethief. I didn’t realize you weren’t staff! I am sorry if I came off really agitated – I honestly am but more just mad that WordPress.com doesn’t make it easy for us to stay safe and free from this type of drivel.
-
I did tag this and then went to get a glass of water. Can’t keep up with you tt. :)
You can report Gravatar abuse by contacting the team here: https://secure.gravatar.com/support/contact-us/ Make sure to mention the username account involved.
-
Hey thanks Jen, I did that earlier (re Gravatar). However, I’m just really concerned that WordPress isn’t letting me clear my notifications so I don’t have to see his picture every time I check my new notifications. It seems like not adding that feature is an oversight now.

I’m a longtime Volunteer (over 11 years now) and I am not a Staff wannbe. As I predate all support docs and all Support Staff except for one member and answer many questions I understand your confusion. Providing what you want it likely to be a complex issue for Staff as everyone with a grvaratar account can click the like button so they may ask you to submit a request to the Ideas Forum but let’s wait and see what their response will be.
-
@froberrypie If you reported the Gravatar and were still logged in here, you might have to log out and clear your cache and cookies for it to go away, but still tagged for Staff. Let’s see what they have to say.
-
The fastest way to report this is to head to the Gravatar profile and click the “report abuse” button.
You can see it here for example: https://en.gravatar.com/froberrypie for example.
You could also temporarily disable likes on the post so nothing will show up. I’m going to see if there’s a better way to go about this, too.
-
Actually since you have a few threads and tickets open on this, I’m going to head over to your private gravatar thread and work with you there. But I will update this thread too if there’s a better solution. Thank you!
-
Thanks! I look forward to seeing a solution soon! :) I worry that if I disable likes my notifications will still show [their] likes and will take longer for it get buried :(
-
So, the image should not be showing up anymore as it was reported and blocked. Can you go ahead and clear your data to see if that will help?
Also:
– Since most of the conversation will be here after all, actually, I’ll just close the email thread and remove the one in Ideas
– I have filed your request to have notifications clear-able
– I’m removing that person’s name from this thread as well so they don’t get any kicks off being mentioned. We’ve got the name recorded here.

How do I delete the cache on the app? I have the WordPress app on my iPhone and it still shows the offending gravatar. I’ve looked in settings and in the app, too, but can’t find it.
