Notifications not being emailed properly

The blinking issue didn’t have anything to do with the actual notice ‘light’ in the upper part of the right hand area of the site next to the site owner icon.

I’ll try and explain what happened. The biggest ‘blinking’ issue has stopped. What happened was when you were on site and clicked the area that brought up all the notifications. You highlight the one you want and it pops up just to the left of the list. Right.

OK when you see the comment in that is highlighted to the right of the list you are given a choice to like it by clicking on the star and or replying. One used to be able to click a like and the comment would stay so you could still reply to the same comment you just ‘liked’ but what would happen is that after you clicked the like the whole thing would disappear and ‘blend’ back into the comment notification list.
Still following me? Then if you wanted to reply to the same comment you would have to highlight it a second time to bring it back up.

That isn’t happening anymore. Thankfully. However what does happen is that when you have liked and or replied to a post comment that has been highlighted and hit the send button… the comment you were replying to jumps back into the right side notification list and the notification that was (I think below) the comment you had just replied to shows up on the left side ‘highlighted’ even if it was a comment you weren’t ready to expand. I hope that makes sense. Because that’s the best I can do.

I’ll have to look a the link later… as I am in the middle of something else. Thank you.

  • I tried duplicating this but I don’t think I’m getting the same thing.

If you’d like to grab a screencast of this and post it to Cloudup.com (or dropbox, or another service) that would be great.

I’m not exactly sure I know what you are asking.
I have really no clue as to what a screen cast is or how to do it.
So I’m not the one who can help with this.
I’m a dinosaur in regards to most computer stuff.

I really liked the way the old notifications worked and I actually can access that. But when I was out of town about a month ago I didn’t have that option so I started using the ‘new’ notification system.

  • Okay. No worries on the screencast.

Let me ask this way: what are you trying to do that the current setup is not allowing? And what is happening when you try?

    As for notifications…

It would be nice that once you reply to a post comment that the image of the comment and your reply wouldn’t disappear once you hit ‘send’. You do get the notice that you have replied to a particular post comment if you end up going back to the same post comment.

Again I don’t know all the complexities of computers and programs to know if it is possible to have a message that says; Thanks for replying to this post comment; are you done now? Click here and this post comment and your remarks will go back to the post notification list and you can go to any another post notification you choose (not the one before or below the one you just commented on that you may or may not have wanted to open yet). I hope that makes sense.

And thanks for understanding that well, me anyway being over (well over) 50 has some difficulty with speaking ‘computerese’.

Every time WordPress thinks it is making a change for the better it just really annoys the folks who are used to how things operated. I generally write in my own program and copy and paste into WP. But I do not use the new and easy way to post because I don’t find it easy. I don’t like it. I post my writing in ‘text’ because then I don’t get extra line space between lines (which I don’t like at all). Then I switch modes when I want to center my document.

One thing that doesn’t translate at all from my documents to WP is formatting. I can’t really do any ‘concrete image’ type poetry because I can’t get the spaces, bold, or italics to transfer. Underlining doesn’t transfer either. It is something I know I can’t do so I live with it.

  • Is it moving to the next comment so you can reply to that?

  • And for this,

Every time WordPress thinks it is making a change for the better it just really annoys the folks who are used to how things operated.

Thanks for the feedback. I can understand that it’s hard to learn things one way only to have to learn the new improved way too. It can also be hard to maintain and improve our services without disrupting anything. We’ll keep working to find that balance.

I will have to take note of it when I have a new comment. I’m all caught up at the moment. I think it goes backwards to a comment right below it that I have already dealt with. But I don’t always deal comment notifications in the order they come in. Sometimes I try to deal with all of the ones that are commenting on the same post before looking at or opening new comments.

Thanks for attempting to keep a balance. That’s pretty much all we can do.

  • Thanks, let me know what you find out.

OK it seems to go to the one/comment below.
Not the not the one above.
I did three in a row. They were return comments though – the first one seemed to stay put after I put in a reply, the reply vanished but it stayed on the original comment. The next two jumped down. And I made sure to start at the top. The last one I commented on and hit reply… the comment next comment that popped up to the left or opened was to the non-opened comment (which was a return comment), that I had not opened. I hope that helps.

I will try to keep tabs the next time I actually get a ‘new’ post comment.

OK it doesn’t seem to matter if it was a return comment from another post or a direct new comment to one of my posts from someone else
after I either like the comment or reply the left highlighted comment that was out of the list jumps to the comment below it whether it had been previously opened or not.

And that only gets a tad confusing when jumping around to try and comment back on comments to the same post. Or if I have to step away from the computer to tend to something else and that’s why it was really important to get the e-mail notices. So I know/knew who I replied to.

While I do not keep track of all the likes, I do like to respond to folks who either make new comments or return a comment from one of my visits to their sites.

Again, thanks for your assistance and trying to keep WP flying :)

  • Thanks, that does help clarify.

This is a feature intended to help folks cruise through replying to comments, top to bottom. I’ll pass along your feedback. Thanks!

  • Unknown's avatar

I’d rather address the oldest comments first, bottom to top.
Thanks for getting back to me, and for all your help.
I wish I could have been more helpful.

  • Noted. I can’t say whether or when this will change, but do know you’ve been heard, and your feedback will be given consideration.

To summarize this thread for others:
    – You will not receive notifications when you make a comment
    – The comment notification window currently encourages you to reply to comments in a top-down fashion. When you reply to the first comment on the list, it will move on to the next comment, and so on.
    – We’re sending in feedback about that process.

I’ll go ahead and close this thread out now. Cheers!
