Notifications tab not working

  • Unknown's avatar

When I click on the notifications tab, the comments, likes and such drop down, but they take up 2/3 of the page, and disappear when I click on them.

The only way to get to them is to click on the tab for the entire archive, but even there the format has changed.

I’ve done the cookie/cache business and all that.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Have you updated your browser recently?
I’m not noticing any trouble with the admin page notifications tab on my blogs.

I tested the notifications icon using Firefox 33 in Windows 8.1, and the notifications icon in the blue toolbar worked for me. I tested it while I was on http://wordpress.com/ is that where you were trying it from too?

designsimply, you asked me to tell you the url for my wordpress account, but as that is a https:// address where I am logged into my account, I am loathe to risk the security applications I will post that it is my danudin2014 account but not the url sorry.

    @danudin,

http://wordpress.com/ or https://wordpress.com/ are generic links to any WordPress.com member’s “Blogs I Follow” page.

If you’re not there but in a secure Admin page, WordPress members won’t be able to get into your dashboard area with an URL link provided here. I had the same concern when I first began using the forum.

@designsimply – I’m using updated Firefox with no addons. My last FF update was some time ago, and I had no problems until about 9 p.m. last night.

This morning, it still isn’t working, whether from my dashboard or from my admin bar. It shows who has commented, who’s liked, and so on, but when I click to expand the notice, the comment, response, etc., isn’t legible.

    Here’s a screenshot

I reported the same problem earlier this morning in the forum post entitled “Notifications menu no longer working properly.” The problem occurs in both of the Macintosh browsers that I have, Safari and Firefox. Until WordPress fixes the problem, the workaround I found is to click “View Archive” at the top of the popped-down Notifications menu. The archived version of the menu still works properly for me.

I just noticed that none of the usual links are clickable, either. There’s no way to get back to someone else’s blog to see what they said.

Ron, no problem! I don’t think it’s a risk because the URL patterns are a common format that anyone can figure out but that no one can get into unless they are an invited user on the blog. You don’t need to post the full URL though! Let’s look at it another way. What I was mainly wondering is whether it was working for you in some places and not others. For example, from my research so far, I know that the notifications icon is missing in the gray toolbar in the forums (I’ve already reported that issue in a bug report), however, I can see the icon in all the other places I check such as from my wp-admin dashboard or from the main WordPress.com dashboard.

Perhaps I can just ask you to check a few different places and let me know whether or not you can see the icon.

First, can you see it at https://wordpress.com/ ?

Next, can you see it if you to to your site, then hover over your blog name at the top left in the gray toolbar, then click “Dashboard”?

Ron, can you also please reply on the other thread instead of this one? I think there are a few different issues to sort through and they are getting all mixed up.

In this thread, the problem is that shoreacres can see the notifications but cannot click on them and the formatting looks messed up. See http://www.varnishgal.com/wordpress.jpg

shoreacres, aha, this screenshot is super helpful, thanks! I was juuuust coming to ask you for one. :) Let me look into this now that I can see what’s going wrong.

wordconnections, I think your issue might be different than the one being reported here. Do your notifications look like this? http://www.varnishgal.com/wordpress.jpg

  • Unknown's avatar

Notice, too, that when I first click on the notifications tab and the list appears, none of the usual links are clickable.

The only way to get to someone else’s blog is to click on “View Archive”, then click on the comment there, and THEN click over to the other person’s blog.

It shows who has commented, who’s liked, and so on, but when I click to expand the notice, the comment, response, etc., isn’t legible.

In the screenshot http://www.varnishgal.com/wordpress.jpg is that what shows up right after you click the speech bubble icon in the gray toolbar, or does the formatting look messed up only after you try clicking?

I did try testing your notifications every way I know how, and I can’t get them to break.

shoreacres , can you walk me through your exact steps that you take leading up to getting the screenshot http://www.varnishgal.com/wordpress.jpg including which dashboard page you are on when you click it?

  • Unknown's avatar

When you take screenshots, can you make them bigger so they show as much as the notifications panel as possible? If you can get the whole browser screen, that would be even better.

After you walk me through your steps, I’ll test again. If I still can’t see it broken in a test on my side, then I might ask you for more screenshots. :)

I’m having the same problem as varnishgal. You can see a screen shot at

wordconnections, aha! You are in the right place then! Thank you very very much for the screenshot. One sec, let me try testing a bit more…

This is the same for both my admin bar and my dashboard. No matter where I try to get in, this is the result:

    1. I click on the speech bubble
    2. I get this.
(Notice there are no live links)
    3. If I click on that page, I get this.

When I scroll over “The Task at Hand” at the left-hand side of my admin bar, I see several changes have been instituted there since yesterday. It’s possible that the notifications glitch resulted from those changes.
