Notifiying commentators
-
Hi Guys
It is important for me that when someone leaves a comment on my blog, that when and if I reply to that someone, he or she will be notified about it, exactly the way I’m notified whenever someone leaves a comment.
I just discovered the option of Comment Reply via Email, and it’s great, but nowhere does it say that the other person gets notified when I reply.
This is the only thing I managed to find but it doesn’t help me much:
Please, is there a way to make this work?
Thanks!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)
-
They will only be notified if they choose that option before they submit the comment. It is the commenter’s choice.
-
Pretty much every theme now has the option to subscribe to the comments via RSS. If people want that, they’ll hit that button; if not, oh well. I, personally, don’t want to be notified, because I leave dozens of comments and don’t want my RSS feed clogged with responses.
-
So what do you guys do when you reply to a comment? Do you reply in the thread itself or do you put your reply inside the comment, effectively editing it?
-
Also, I was thinking there should be some option here like in Facebook, where when you reply to a status message for example, you get notified whenever someone else responds to the same thread, if you choose to. So in the same way, as an “outsider”, here you’ll have the option to be notified if there are other comments in the specific post you replied to.
Of course, the difference is that in Facebook everyone who is commenting is registered in the site, where in WordPress you can reply to a post without being registered.

I have comment threading turned on, so I reply to the actual comment and then my reply shows up right below the other comment indented. You can turn on threaded nested commenting at settings > discussion.
-
You can see threaded nested comments here on my blog: http://opposablethumbz.wordpress.com/2009/08/15/soundcloud-attempt-take-2/#comments . Right now the indent from one level to another is subtle. I might make it a little more obvious at some point.

With custom CSS nested comments are a little fiddly, and I haven’t updated mine. I’ve always replied individually to every comment on myblog, because I’m just a big believer in churn. It’s an individual choice, though. I would never NEVER reply within a comment, because there is literally now way other than re-opening the thread frequently, for the commenter to know you replied.
Of course, i have the comment Widget in my sidebar, so people can see when I’ve gone through and replied to everything. It’s invaluable; it will increase your hits, if you’re not currently using it, because everyone loves to follow the conversation.

I just increased left padding in .children in my CSS from 5px to 15px, and that made it more obvious. It could become a problem though if I had too many levels set.
-
I tried nested comments with my CSS and it just didn’t work. Went off to the right and became invisible. But you know what you’re doing and I don’t
-
raincoaster, by the “comment widget” you mean the “recent comments” section? It’s been there all along. Don’t know if it increased the hits, but my posts usually get very few comments except for the odd post here and there.
Or do you mean something else? -
I guess raincoaster means effectively the “recent comments” section.
Actually, I think the problem is that the box for subscribing to comments is just under the box for commenting, what makes it hardly visible. People pays attention to the writing box, they click “comment”, and that’s it, most of them won’t realize on the small box below… as actually I hadn’t realize on that until today, though I have my blog in WordPress almost a year now!
I guess that placing this subscription box just below the name/e-mail fields, before the comment box, would make it much more visible and most commenters would tick that box!
