Arabic fonts [edited to redact email]

Good morning. I have a problem in my WordPress Blog. It concerns the use of Arabic fonts, in the links of the titles of posts, on my blog.
    Specifications :
    – My blog is : http://LivresChauds.Wordpress.Com. Theme : Twenty Twelve.
    – In my blog, i publish posts in two languages: Arabic and French. The principal language is Arabic.
    – I use a laptop PC Dell. Operating System: Windows Vista family premium. Microsoft office 2010. With its language package.
My Problem: Before, everything works very well. But since some months, the link of titles of posts (offered to visitors for a free download) are not written with Arabic fonts (despite the original title is written with Arabic fonts), but are written with Latin fonts.
    1) Before, when i publish a big posts or book, i just insert a link to it, so visitors can download it freely. And when i insert the link of this heavy post (which is written with Arabic fonts), from clicking on the button ‘insert a file or media’, the title of this post is correctly written with Arabic fonts, as you can see it in the following image :

Figure 1 The link of title of post (offered for download) is correctly written with Arabic fonts.
    2) After : Since some months, when i do the same previous operations, the link of the title obtained is written with Latin fonts, as you can observe it in the following image :

Figure 2 The link of title of post (offered for download) is wrongly written with Latin fonts.
    3) When i click on the button ‘insert a file or media’, i see that the titles of my posts (uploaded into WordPress) are now written with Latin fonts, instead of Arabic fonts, as you can remark it on the following image :

Remark 1 : Many times, i have tried to select that link written in Latin fonts, right click, and select LANGUAGE, then ARABIC. But it does not work.
Remark 2 : This problem diminish the number of download of posts from my blog.
Remark 3 : this problem concern not only me, but anyone like me who use, in the same time, an Arabic language, and a Latin language.
Thank you for your help. With respectful greetings.

In response to M. Kokkieh :
Thank you very much for interest.
    1) Since some months, my problem occur, not only in some links of posts, but in all new links of posts I insert in my blog (in order to allow visitors to my blog to download posts freely).
    2) Here is an example of link (written wrongly with Latin fonts instead of Arabic fonts) : https://livreschauds.wordpress.com/2016/09/14/%d8%ad%d9%88%d8%a7%d8%b1-%d9%86%d9%82%d8%af%d9%8a-%d8%ad%d9%88%d9%84-%d9%81%d8%b6%d9%8a%d8%ad%d8%a9-%d8%ac%d9%86%d8%b3%d9%8a%d8%a9-%d8%a8%d9%8a%d9%86-%d9%82%d9%90%d9%8a%d9%91%d8%a7%d8%af%d9%90%d9%8a/
    3) Remark 4: In my message sent to WordPress Forum Help, the tree images I have pasted (in this message) are not viewed or visible.
    4) I have explained well the problem in the following message (version 2):

  • Thank you for that link. What is happening here is that when you upload the file to the media library, the file name that’s saved in our system cannot contain Arabic characters – the computer cannot read those characters. So the Arabic characters are automatically converted into a type of code called Unicode which the computer can read. So, %8a is a code representing a letter in Arabic, but it a way that the computer knows what it is seeing.

To prevent this, you need to not just insert the link in your post, but you need to give it what we call anchor text.

    Please do the following:

    1. Go to that post you linked to and edit it.

    2. In the editor, click on the link, and click the Pencil icon.

    3. Click on the Link Text box and type the title you want to show in Arabic. This link will show you where to type it.

    https://cloudup.com/cPU1wkkozUK

If you then update the post, the link should appear with the Arabic text.

There is no way to prevent the file name from being converted to Unicode, so every time you insert a link that contains Arabic characters you’ll need to edit it and add your own Link Text in this way. Then the correct characters will display on the link.

In my message sent to WordPress Forum Help, the tree images I have pasted (in this message) are not viewed or visible.

It’s not possible to upload images to the forum. You will need to use a service like Cloudup.com which I used to show you that image.

Thank you very much M. Kokkieh, for your helpful response, and for your precise explanations.
    1) The method you have indicated work well (it permit to pass throw Unicode to Arabic characters). But, I am very sorry, it is not sufficient. For these following reasons :
    2) During last years, I mean during my first use of WordPress Blog (from 2011 to 2015), this problem of Unicode characters did not exist. It have appeared only since some months. I don’t know what have happened, and why. This problem have perhaps appeared after I have changed the Maine language of my WordPress Blog from French to Arabic. But before, Arabic characters (in links) were never automatically converted in Unicode. And this problem doesn’t exist before. So why WordPress cannot become again simple and powerful, as it was before.
    3) This problem of automatic conversion of Arabic characters into Unicode (in links) has another uncomfortable implication. When I click the button ‘Insert file or media’, and go to my Library, all the titles of my posts (in Library) are written into Unicode. And the method indicated by M. Kokkieh does not work in this case.
Please watch here one image of some posts in my Library :

    https://cloudup.com/iLyddI2n1oz

So I can’t read titles of my posts (in my Library); and I can’t distinguish between my posts. Then, I can’t act on my posts. And it is embarrassing. And this problem didn’t exist before.
    4) The method indicated by M. Kokkieh do not allow visitors to download my posts by clicking on the link (of post). Because when visitors click on the link (of post) obtained by M. Kokkieh method, they are only moved to the same Tab, or to the same page, but without downloading the concerned post. However, it is essential in my blog to be able to download posts. Because the peculiarity of my Blog (http://LivresChauds.Wordpress.Com) is that I publish books, and very long posts (usually between 20 and 100 pages). And people say that they cannot read theme on screen or monitor, but only on paper. So I must necessary insert, in the beginning of posts, a link which allow to visitors (of my blog) to freely download these posts or books, so they can later print them on paper.
I am very sorry to embarrass you by these problems. Unfortunately, this problem concern most bloggers who use two languages, whose one is an Asian language. With my respectful greetings.

  • 2) During last years, I mean during my first use of WordPress Blog (from 2011 to 2015), this problem of Unicode characters did not exist.

When I click the button ‘Insert file or media’, and go to my Library, all the titles of my posts (in Library) are written into Unicode.

As far as I know this is how it’s supposed to work, but we’ve asked someone to look into that. I will let you know as soon as I have more information.

    4) The method indicated by M. Kokkieh do not allow visitors to download my posts by clicking on the link (of post).

It appears that when you changed the anchor text for the link, you also somehow changed the link itself, so that link is now linking to the post, instead of linking to the PDF file. So the link went to https://livreschauds.wordpress.com/2016/09/14/%d8%ad%d9%88%d8%a7%d8%b1-%d9%86%d9%82%d8%af%d9%8a-%d8%ad%d9%88%d9%84-%d9%81%d8%b6%d9%8a%d8%ad%d8%a9-%d8%ac%d9%86%d8%b3%d9%8a%d8%a9-%d8%a8%d9%8a%d9%86-%d9%82%d9%90%d9%8a%d9%91%d8%a7%d8%af%d9%90%d9%8a/ instead of going to https://livreschauds.files.wordpress.com/2016/09/d988d8abd98ad982d8a9-d8add988d8a7d8b1-d986d982d8afd98a-d8add988d984-d981d8b6d98ad8add8a9-d8acd986d8b3d98ad8a9-d8a8d98ad986-d982d98a4.pdf, which is the file in your media library.

I’ve fixed that for you, and that link now opens the PDF. When you edit other links like this, please be careful to only change the link text, and not the link itself.

Thank you very much M. Kokkieh for your helpful answer.
    1) Yesterday I was not on the line, because I had a rheum. I am Sorry.
    2) You have fixed the Anchor text for the link (so it opens now the PDF file). Thank you very much. But I am not sure I have understood well how you have done it, so it remain difficult for me to do it with success by myself every time I need it.
    3) I am very sorry for this following remark. You have said before that: «when you upload the file to the media library, the file name that’s saved in our system [WordPress] cannot contain Arabic characters – the computer cannot read those characters. So the Arabic characters are automatically converted into a type of code called Unicode which the computer can read».
The consequence is that, from one side the computer understand Unicode symbols (instead of Arabic or Asian characters), but from another side the user of computer cannot read or understand this Unicode. So, when the user is in his Library, he cannot distinguish between different titles of posts in his media Library.
I hope that WordPress choose to treat all kind of characters of the world within the same manner or method.
I hope that WordPress remain simple and powerful as before.
All thanks for all American people who accept to share with the rest of the world many wonderful things, like Internet, or WordPress, etc. And these good things can help hundreds of millions of people to emerge from their underdevelopment, as we have seen, for example, in some way, in «Arabic Spring».
    With my respectful greetings.

  • Here is a short video of how to change the anchor text. I hope it helps :)

Regarding the characters that are converting, it looks like they’re working on fixing it in the new version of WordPress that should be out in a week or two. I’ll check on this again once that version is available on WordPress.com and let you know.

Thank you very much M. Kokkieh. Your video is lucid.

  • I’m glad it helped :)

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi – the character conversion issue should be now fixed. Could you confirm?

  • Unknown's avatar

i am sorry. i have opened my Media Library in WordPress, but all the titles of my media are all in Unicod (except pictures). That means that all titles of my posts written withe Arabic characters (in Media Library) are still in Unicod, and are non readable. Thank you very much for all your efforts.

  • Unknown's avatar

I mean (of course) that the problem is not resolved. In my Media Library (in WordPress.Com), i can not read items written with Arabic characters. Because they all appear only in Unicode. So i can do anything with my Media Library. Thank you very much.

  • Hi @livreschauds, sorry to hear that. I’m checking in with the developers.
