number of posts

How do I add to the number of posts that that display? I only have 3 that will display at a time. I changed the number in one spot, but that didn’t change for me. I read somewhere that I need to add a child theme, but I don’t know how to do that. I’ve also read I can do that in customizing, but I don’t know how to do that either.
