Obscene commenter needs to be blocked from WP
-
Last week, I wrote a humor post about a comedy film. I received an offensive and improper comment that I did not publish. When I did not publish the comment, the commenter sent me another comment in which he blasted me as being a Religious Bigot and used many other unprintable names. I blocked his IP’s via my blacklist. Once he saw that he was no longer getting through to my blog, he then set about visiting all the other blogs on my blogroll. He has been harrassing these people with obscene comments for the past week. A GOOGLE search of this person shows that he has a long history of trolling blogs and websites for no other purpose than to leave obscene and innapropriate comments on peoples sites. He has no blog of his own and his return address is just a link to the “Freedom from Religion” website. He uses the name Neil C, Reinhardt and his IP’s that I have blocked. A disturbed person like this has no business being on WordPress and I strongly ask that you consider blocking him from further access. Many faithful WordPress users are being unnescessarily harrassed by this man. Checking Google, I found evidence that he has already been banned from one website for exhibiting the same bad behavior. Thank you for your assistance.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Blocking IP Addresses
Please read our privacy policy regarding the collection of IP addresses. On occasion, we are asked if an IP address can be blocked. This may be, for example, if someone is posting unpleasant comments and/or is generally being annoying to you or other bloggers. Please note that we do not block IP addresses for the reason that it may inadvertently prevent other people from using WordPress.com.
However, you can choose to blacklist an individual’s IP address from Settings -> Discussion in your blog’s dashboard. This will send all comments from that individual directly into your spam queue. http://en.support.wordpress.com/ip-addresses/

You have total control over comment moderation and which comments get approved and which do not get approved. Trolls are attention seekers. By posting this to a public forum which is indexed by Google IMHO you have made an error in judgment that may result in feeding the troll’s head when he or she sees this thread.
Also note that ISPs save money by placing hundreds of us in the same IP block so your attempts blacklist one troll’s comments so they are sent to spam may indeed result in spamming other folks in the same IP block as well.
Please read these:

The mentally ill have just as much right to comment on WordPress as anyone else. If the issue is not with his mental illness but with his comments, you’re far better advised to block his username rather than his IP. As Timethief has pointed out, IP bans are too sweeping.

Everyone has a right to comment yes. But that does not give them a right to be abusive, and to the spread their abuse to other readers of your blog because you dared to block them. It is sad that this kind of abuse is necessarily allowed by the limitations of blocking as indicated. This particular Troll has verbally attacked numerous people, most without provocation beyond being a regular on someone blog. It seems odd that nothing can be done about it, even if I understand why blocking IP’s on a global level will not work.

What works is each of us bloggers exerting authority over our own blogs by Moderating comments. We have a choice of moderating only first time comments or moderating all comments and I choose the latter. I have a cut and dried commenting policy posted and I carry through quietly and unnoticed.

Different types of blogs seem to draw different types of trolls – religion & politics seem to get more than their fair share – use the moderation feature and set a trolls name to the black list – and grow a thick skin – short of sending someone to Gitmo or having them arrested your options are limited – ignoring them is the best and it drives them up the wall –

That’s just the thing. This particular troll is as much a spammer as a troll. He is indiscriminately and abusively forcing his agenda on blogs and post that have absolutely nothing to do with what he is saying. But I understand that the only solution is to simply block and ignore on an individual basis. Still it is rather frustrating.
