Obtaining a premium theme
-
Yesterday’s thread finally got me to WordPress.org since I have my own website on an outside server. When I explained about a premium theme I wanted to buy and use, I was told it belonged to WordPress.com; that I might not be able to use it on my website so I should come “back over here” and ask.
Are premium themes (like Axon) only for use on WordPress.com or is there a way to purchase it and use it on my website? Thank you
-
Premium themes here at WordPress.COM are licensed and adapted to run on our multiuser software. They may not have all the features that the WordPress.ORG versions have. That’ s why they are offered for sale and use only on WordPress.COM hosted blogs. Axon is designed by DesignOrbital. Contact the designer and purchase a version that will run on WordPress.ORG software.

OK thank you. I like the theme . . . so
What is the charge to have my site hosted here, and how complicated would it be to transfer everything over? Is that something I do or something I need to buy?

Hello again,
I don’t anything about the recommended hosts web hosting prices so let’s get that straight.WordPress.com and WordPress.org are completely separate.
http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/1. Hire a web host and purchase a domain http://wordpress.org/hosting/
2. Set up a WordPress.org install and equip it with a theme and plugins.
http://wordpress.org/themes/
http://wordpress.org/plugins/3. To move your content you need to create an XML export file of your content. It will not include the theme and widgets as they cannot be exported. Export your content out of your WordPress.com blog http://en.support.wordpress.com/export/ and import it into the install.
4. WordPress.com is the top level domain here and all blogs hosted by WordPress.com are on .wordpress.com sub-domains. Purchase a site redirect upgrade from wordpress.com
http://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/ or if you have domain mapping then see here http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/move-domain/#change-name-servers-to-point-the-domain-outside-of-wordpress-com and here http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/move-domain/5. Transfer subscribers See http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/moving-your-subscribers/
6. Set your wordpress.com blog visibility to private. To change blog visibility to private go to > Settings > Reading scroll to Blog Visibility and choose option 3 . See the guide here http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/
Alternatively you can purchase a Guided Transfer and Staff will do the move and set up for you http://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/
WordPress.com and WordPress.org have different log-ins and run different versions of themes with same names. If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, so you can post to the support forums there and receive advice from WordPress.ORG bloggers.

OK sorry I guess it wasn’t clear. I already have a WordPress.org theme hosted on a site which I pay for hosting. My question was what costs I should anticipate if I moved my website to WordPress.com
-
Read first please very carefully so are clear on the limitations of blogging at WordPress.COM http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
Then read these support docs
http://en.support.wordpress.com/import/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-from-wordpress-orgNote that WordPress.COM provides free blogs and hosts them free of charge. WordPress.COM does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible.
Domain mapping of an existing domain URL that you already own and purchased elsewhere is not done free of charge. You will have to renew the domain name purchase where you made it and the domain mapping purchase here every year.
Important Notes Before Upgrading http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#important-notes-before-upgrading
Mapping an existing domain costs $13. annually. In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from and it does not matter what that underlying .wordpress.com URL is. It does not have to match the domain URL. If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog and purchase a domain name by purchasing an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade for the blog.
See here for mapping an existing domain that you already own http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades is where you do the primary blog set up knowing it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

Timethief thank you for patiently helping my questions. I suppose this is an opinion question but my website (newtestamentchurch.com) is really a content site (resource) and not much need for blogging as I understand it.
Am I foolish to be considering a blog site? -
It’s more or less the same software as WP.org. There are security precautions here that mean you can’t use javascript, iframes, or raw flash. You can’t put ads on your site; unless you buy the No Ads upgrade, WP.com puts ads on your site here.
If you can live with that, you can have a site here. I don’t see why you’d need two, but that’s up to you.

Are there sample sites by ordinary people I could check out so I could see what the ads look like? That would be a sticking point and help me decide
