Odd italic formatting when composing posts

  • Unknown's avatar

    I’ve encountered strange formatting issues when composing posts using Safari and Chrome on a Mac (OSX 10.8.2). The issue does not happen in Firefox (I’m using the current iteration of all these browsers).

    Here’s what happens:
    When I copy some text and past it into a post using the “Paste and Match Style” command, the text pastes fine. However, when I start editing, strange italicization starts happening. If I click at the beginning of a hard return and backspace to have one paragraph flow into the previous paragraph, all the text that was in the paragraph immediately after the insertion point will turn italic. It happens every time. This behavior is fairly new (past 2 weeks maybe…) Any ideas? It’s a bit frustrating.

    Thanks,
    John

    When I copy some text and paste

    Microsoft Word is a word processing program that’s not compliant with web standards. The result of copy and pasting from Microsoft Word into the Tiny MCE editor in WordPress blogs can be unexpected, unless you know how to use the built-in features in the Visual editor for using Word cleanly.
    See: http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#pasting-text

    If you aren’t copying and pasting from Microsoft Word but from elsewhere see here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#pasting-text

    You describe italic lettering and that means you copied and pasted something that had an open italics tag like this:
    <em>
    Well for every HTML tag that’s open like that one there needs to be a closed one like this:
    </em>
    That ensures only a phrase like this phrase will be in italic lettering. But if the tag isn’t closed you will have italic lettering appearing throughout your posts and even in your sidebar which may fall and display below your posts. http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2012/05/19/sidebar-at-the-bottom-and-related-issues/

    Hi Timethief,
    Thanks for you help. I wasn’t aware of the “Paste as Plain Text” button and that helps. Interestingly, the text that I’m copying comes from Weather Underground (I publish a daily weather blog…) When I check out the text that I paste into WP, I don’t see any tags at all, so it sort of seems that something in WP is adding them… Curious…

    Anyway, thanks!

    Hi again,

    I was trying to say that I didn’t see and “” tags, but the comment went ahead and formatted itself…

    Let’s try that again: <em> tags…

    There are tags that are added, and active, but invisible. They’re not being added by WP, they’re being added from the copy/paste. To prevent problems like this in future, go to Settings->Writing and select “WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML” and save.
