offering incentive with sign up

    Hi there,
    My site is btlowry.com
I’d like to build subscribers. I’ve put a signup form in the side panel using the signup widget. I’d like to offer subscribers an incentive when they subscribe: a short story available in multiple formats–e-book and audio. I have access to a server where I can upload the files to that’s no problem. I’d like that once someone’s subscribed, they’re automatically sent the links to download these files, along with a thank you message. Please tell me how I can do this simple thing.
    Thanks!

There isn’t a way to do this the way you are hoping. The way the follow widget works is that WordPress.com users who choose to follow click the button and your site is automatically added to the list of sites they follow. There is no e-mail that gets sent, so there is nothing for you to add your link to.

People who click the follow link when they aren’t logged into WordPress.com do get a confirmation e-mail that can be modified by you at the link below.

Keep in mind this e-mail goes out before the subscription is confirmed, so it’s still not ideal.

The problem is the goal of the follow widget isn’t the same as a signup for a more traditional mailing list. If you want to build your list, and send incentives, you’ll be better off setting up an account with an e-mail marketing company and connect that list to your WordPress.com site.

Let me know if you have any questions about that.

    Hi there,
    Thanks for your helpful reply.
Yes, would you please give me some advice about setting this functionality up with an e-mail marketing company, and how to connect them with my wordpress.com site?
    Thanks

There are lots of good options out there and you’ll want to do your own research on which one works best for you.

That having been said, a fellow WordPress.com blogger wrote a piece about the process she used to add a MailChimp signup form to her WordPress.com site that might help you.
