offsite redirect

i have searched the forums for any info about offsite redirect since it seems a fairly new option i have not found any that answers my question.

what is offsite redirect? Does it automatically redirect you wordpress.com blog to your own hosted blog without having to do that process wherein you have to update you domains name servers?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Where did you hear about it?

    Under Upgrades –> Domains

Good catch. I expect there will be a post from support coming soon on the WP.com blog. I would expect it does what you say, but paid upgrades generally get blog posts to explain them.

I would think that if you had registered a Domain that you would still want to update the name servers.

It looks to me like the redirect is designed for a stock your-blog.wordpress.COM that you now want to send to a different URL, a common request is “I just got a name and self-hosted site how do I send my visitors there” or “I spelled my name wrong here and have moved to a name I like better, how do I send visitors there.”

It looks like WordPress.COM has responded to the often requested 301 redirect. Hats off to the Staff for yet another improvement.

Just my guess before the first cup of tea this morning.

I have been trying to set up such a redirect, but keep on getting an error message saying “temporarily unavailable’. Did anyone get this to work? Considering that I have already (tried to) change(d) the DNS with my registrar, the URL I purchased is not accessible anymore. Kind of annoying…

I’m getting the “temporarily unavailable” message as well. This is a great offer that I really want to take advantage of!

We are having the same problem — c’mon wordpress, help out!

Volunteers do not have backend access to blogs, only Staff do. Have you filed support tickets including your details so Staff is aware of your issue?

The other thing to remember is that when new things like this appear, at first there may be bugs to work out. Wait for the official announcement. At that point it should be working reasonably well.

I’m wondering the same thing about this offsite redirect. I’d love to use it but it doesn’t seem usable yet… I bought it and nothing happened so I got a refund. Any idea when they will announce this and we can actually start using it?

None. Unfortunately, they’re not exactly transparent about management decisions until they figure they’re fully ready to launch.
