Offsite Redirect from wordpress.com to wordpress.org

I would like to redirect beforethecoffee.wordpress.com to my new beforethecoffee.com (wordpress.org) site. What happens when a viewer links to a page in my blog like this: beforethecoffee.wordpress.com/photomatix-tutorial/ how is that redirected?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

As long as you are using the same permalink structure on the .ORG blog, “Day and name,” then all the links from your old blog will redirect seamlessly to the same pages on the new blog.

Let’s say I move a set of tutorial pages into a page with a drop down menu called “Tutorials” then what happens when the link tries to take them to a specific tutorial?

I may have not been clear. If I go to “Page Attributes” and change the drop down from (no parent) to parent causing the specific tutorial to be a within the TUTORIALS page.

Either way I notice now, after the Export/Import to wp.org the blogs permalinks are different. Specifically the forward slash parts after the “.com” My newly hosted blog has not gone public, before it does can I change the permalinks? Here is an example of what I think it should look like:

    OLD WP.COM BLOG:
    beforethecoffee.wordpress.com/photomatix-tutorial/

    NEW WP.ORG BLOG same page:
    beforethecoffee.com/?page_id=38

    Change permalink to:
    beforethecoffee.com/photomatix-tutorial/

    Does this make sense?

    Thank you so much.

Yes you can change the permalinks, but you need to ask how at http://wordpress.org/support

Sort of I think. You have to go to settings > permalinks and set the permalink structure to “Day and name.” That will match the permalink structure used here.

As long as you don’t change the title of the page to something like beforethecoffee.com/squid-ink/ you are fine. Just don’t rename pages, or edit the page slugs.

The blog has one other link that I’d like to redirect, it’s a popular page in the blog. Is it possible to buy a second Offsite Redirect and have two working like this:

    beforethecoffee.wordpress.com >> beforethecoffee.com

    beforethecoffee.wordpress.com/photomatix-tutorial/ >> beforethecoffee.com/?page_id=38

I haven’t done the upgrade to Offsite Redirect yet, does it only allow one redirect?

    Thank you very much.

If you don’t change the permalink structure on the new blog to match that here, if you keep the search engine unfriendly default style that ends like /?page_id=38 then the redirect would be of no use to you really.

With the redirect, beforethecoffee.wordpress.com/photomatix-tutorial/ will redirect to beforethecoffee.com/photomatix-tutorial/

It will NOT redirect to beforethecoffee.com/?page_id=38

You can only have one redirect and that one redirect will redirect all URLs here to LIKE URLs on the new blog. You HAVE to change the permalink structure on the new blog to match what is here.

You can only have one redirect per blog here.

If you want to redirect a page from a blog here to a different page on the new blog, then you will have to do a second redirect in the .htaccess file, but multiple redirects make search engines very suspicious and if there are too many redirects on a single page, they might not index the page at all.
