oh no what have i done??

Hi all i would appreciate a little help if possible. Until recently my blog was smilesalot1969.wordpress.com but i changed the name for personal reasons to xpanda1969x.wordpress.com. It all seems fine and showing the new name etc but for some reason i am getting zero traffic when before i was getting 250-380 daily. What have i done wrong??

You haven’t done anything “wrong”. However, as you did not purchase a site redirect upgrade http://en.support.wordpress.com/offsite-redirect/ all the smilesalot1969.wordpress.com URLs are broken links now. When clicked they produce a 4040 (page not found) and it will take about 3 – 4 months for Google and Bing to reindex your content under the new xpanda1969x.wordpress.com URLs.
Read this very carefully:
7. The final option presented on this screen allows you to discard your current address. This option will permanently disable the address and you will not be able to reuse it. Only select this option if you are sure you will not use the address again. If you want to redirect traffic to the new blog, you can keep the address and purchase the Site Redirect upgrade. http://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/

oh dear i hadn’t realised it was as complicated as all that. will gradually republishing my posts under my new address fix the problem or do i need to just wait a few months for it to fix itself?

No – don’t do that!

Yes, just leave it be and the search engines will re-index the content.

It looks like you write regularly – that is the best cure – each time you publish a Post your blog calls up the search engines and says “new stuff – stop by” – then the search engines will also take a look around at your “new” blog and start to index it – during this time they will change the index and your old blog will start to go down in the search engine and your new site will start to move up the ladder

thank-you for your help :D i was worried i was going to have to start all over again. Yes i do blog most days, i have an awful lot of waffle inside this head of mine :D
