Ok, I am a newbie, few queries.
-
Hi, I have just set up a blog on here and have a few queries
1 – Whats the rule on profanity? Is it allowed as long as it isnt in every sentence?
2 – I heard of a WP feature where you can ping Google to let them know a new post has been added, can you on here? And speaking of Google, how long does it take for a WP blog to get indexed.
3 – Is there a ‘digg it’ option?
4 – And whats best way to get traffic? And if I add someone to a blogroll does it automatically show up on there site too? (I.E, my site in there blogroll)?
5 – Anything I should do before I properly start?
Thnx

Here’s a link to basic wordpress.com resources in a Beginner’s Guide that will help you answer your own questions https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=11280
(1) wordpress.com does not censor – there are no rules on profanity
(2) (a) pingomatic will automatically ping several services every time you publish a post
(b) it takes about 4-6 weeks for your blog contents to appear on Google – answer in the FAQs http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/07/why-isnt-my-blog-in-google/
(3) a digg button – the FAQs http://faq.wordpress.com/2007/02/22/how-do-i-digg/
(4) increasing blog traffic FAQs http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/11/15/more-traffic/
forum searchbox https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=1273
(5) Get search engine attention by registering https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=5859&page&replies=9#post-37917 and read the FAQs -
Okay, I tried searching the FAQ but didnt see it but is there a way to turn off the archives? – Thnx
-
There is no way to turn off archives. Why exactly would you want to do that? And, as you do not have the archives widget in your sidebar yet I’m puzzled as to why this would cause you concern.
-
Because I have heard of duplication problems with Google when they can access the same page via multiple links?
And the archives are showing for me….
-
Yes, I do see Archives now in your sidebar http://anegativecreep.wordpress.com/2007/08/
And although, I do not know what you mean at all by your other statement it’s up to you whether or not you wish to pull the Archives widget out of your sidebar -> Presentation -> Widgets (drag the widget out of the sidebar box and place it in the Available widgets box) -> Save Changes -

You are quite right. The duplication of content in archives, cats, causes a mark down at Google. Folks who are serious about this stuff need to go to WP dot org and go third party hosted. Then do the SEO thing.

Ok sorry I just noticed something change
Before my blog url of my post was http://anegativecreep.wordpress.com/television/people-who-watch-big-brother/
But now it’s changed too http://anegativecreep.wordpress.com/2007/08/02/people-who-watch-big-brother/ ?

atthe404 – How would you fix the duplication thing in catergories? I am gonna be doing a blog for serious soon and am hosting it myself etc, this is more of a muckabout to get the hang of WordPress before I do it for money, I know about the archives but not about the cats, well the fix anyway.
I can turn off archives but dont want to turn off cats
Thnx

Get listed in Google. My new blog took two days to get listed. So. . . . .
Submit your site here on the right – http://www.submitexpress.com/ Submit it to only the top 40 search engines. And also claim your blog at Technorati and place Technorati’s buttons and such on your site. And make sure to ping your blog. I ping mine at http://technorati.com/ping and http://www.pingoat.com/ And email other similar sites like yours for link exchanges on each other’s blogrolls. And to get listed on search engines, try to get your blog on at least one person’s blog that is already listed on Google. This way when they get indexed, your site will then be indexed.

Forgot to add that it helps when you edit your profile here to include the url of your site so your name here on the forum and comments on WP blogs becomes clickable.

For serious SEO dev you are into pro territory. There are a few themes that have this stuff, there are some plugins, and a few of us have some experience but it is a specialist field. And generally org questions are not allowed / taken in this forum. I hope that gets you headed that way. Cats are pretty much redundant now anyway. They are about 2 years out of date. In Habari there just aren’t any. At all :)
-
Why are Cats redundant nowadays? Surely they are sitll good for finding posts on a specific subject?
-
I believe in the wordpress.org software context they have been/are being replaced with tags. And here at wordpress.com categories and tags are terms that are used synonymously. But like the guru said we cannot answer wordpress.org questions on this forum. :)
-
If you look at the urls here at com they are the same for cats as they are for tags. WP is just coming into line with the latest thinking in this respect. Incidentally WP 2.3 alpha now has tags built in. I am running it and it is cool. No UTW needed. Which is a relief. The thing about tags is that they are meta data. Cats do not work when the info in question is removed from the context in which it was “categorised” eg in a feed.
Tags can be read and hence filtered more universally. Are you confused? You should be. :)
And no. To answer your q cats are not good for searching. But tags are. But you have not tagged this post yet. :) -
yeah, I am a bit, I am big into seo so dont want any dup probs etc when I do my blog properly so it is something I will look into.
