Old address after domain mapping?
-
My site is doing surprisingly well, so I am considering domain mapping to a domain I already own. My question is this – when the domain is mapped, what happens when people go to the old (wordpress.com) address? Do they still get to the site but then see the new URL? What about links and RSS feeds, etc. Presumably I need to tell people to make the switch? Anything else I should be aware of before I make the move?

I’ve never purchased a domain. So I don’t know. You can search the faq to see if anything there can help.

You will lose you page rank and such but the sooner you make the move the better. What will happen is that folks that use the old address (yourblog.wordpress.com) will be redirected to your new blog. Your old rss feed will still work as will the links. I’ve been using domain mapping for over a year now and some of the links to my site are still using the old address – it’s not a problem.

WordPress.com correctly redirects your old address to the new domain when you purchase a domain mapping upgrade. There is usually a temporary drop in search traffic but Google is fairly quick at recognizing the change and accepting the new url.
