Old Blogger to WordPress: Question re tags, photos etc

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi. I have read through the questions re importing a blog from Blogger but I have additional questions. I would be grateful for all help. Thanks.

I want to import one blog from OLD Blogger to one of my two blogs on WordPress.

Q1. I have nearly 200 posts. Do I need to import in batches?

Q2. Will the import process change the formatting – spacing, font bold/ italics/ underline etc? I have used uniform font size all through on Blogger but there is of course italicisation, underlining, bold, offsetting etc.

Q3. I have nearly 40 tags on Blogger. How does WordPress import them – as tags or as categories?

Do they retain association with the posts they are with on Blogger?

Q4. I have some posts on Blogger which have cross-links with some of my other posts on Blogger?

    Do these cross-links change automagically?

If not, could someone please tell me how WordPress modifies them?

Q5. I have a lot of pictures – mostly photos I have taken – on specific posts on Blogger. But I have never had an easy time adding photos on my WordPress blog.

Will these photos import ok or will I have to modify them all?

Q6. This last question should perhaps be on Technorati…

But if someone who have done Blogger –> WordPress import could help me, it will be great.

Will I lose my Technorati rank altogether and have to start from scratch?

    Thanks for all help..

All incredible questions and without having imported from Blogger myself, I know I cannot answer all of them! That would be best for a support request on Monday if no one can answer them for you!

Why not set it up and just do it?

Please note the forum searchbox has threads specific to Blogger import and export issues. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/search.php?q=Blogger+import

Q1 – I have nearly 200 posts. Do I need to import in batches?
No. That’s a very small file but it’s not recommended that you choose to import/export during the busiest hours on the internet in North America. Confirmation in forum search box.

Q2 – Will the import process change the formatting …
No the xml file will contain your posts as they are now. But when you inject that content into a wordpress.com theme there may be changes.

Q3 – Suffice to say that Google and Technorati spiders recognize both tags or categories so that aspect really does seem to be worrisome.

    Q4 – I do not know.

    Q5 – images
The FAQs makes on import from Blogger it clear that Blogger does no allow hotlinking to your images and images are not included in the export file. You will have to upload them all again one at a time (there is no bulk image uploading method here) onto the wordpress.com servers. http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/11/09/import-from-blogger-typepad-mt-lj/

Q6 – The page rank your blog has achieved and the posts have achieved accrues to the url of the blog and the post permalinks. When the url of the blog changes you break all the permalinks to the posts. They can no longer be found at the blogspot url, therefore, I believe that your blog ranking starts again.

On Q4, I just imported my blog to a self-hosted install and I’m having to go back into my posts and correct the cross-links to my own posts so that they point to the posts on the new blog.

    Q5:

You state the images are mostly photos you have taken yourself. With this in mind, consider using Flickr or another image host instead of your blog host (Blogger or WordPress, etc). Image hosts tend to offer bulk uploading, and you will not have to worry about broken links to images if you decide to move again.

Hi. I did the import and found the following:

    1. All posts imported fine in about 1.5 min (at 7 pm British time last night, Saturday).

    2. Retained all formatting. (you can see the new one on obesityheadlines.wordpress.com)

    3. tags were imported as categories which I do not mind

    4. Links within posts to other posts show as blogger post links but I am going to clean that up slowly. I shall have to keep the blogger blog till this is done.

    5. In some posts images have been imported as is. I do however see that there is an images “post” which I have to check to see what is happening there… Some non-uniformity.. I should follow Judy’s advice I think.

    6. Technorati and Blogburst need individual updates.. Will report soon

    OTHER:
Since my ‘blogroll’ on blogger was classified, no links were imported which is ok because I did a purge.

    Thanks.

    @shefaly
re: #5 you might want to check the links to all your images. I found they were linking back to my old blog and pulling the image from there.

I’m glad to hear that the import went well for you. Here’s is a link to A Beginner’s Guide that you may find useful https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=11280

Welcome to wordpress and happy blogging. :)

    @TSP
Provided that you do not delete your wordpress.com blog the images will remain available through hotlinking. By marking the wordpress.com blog “private” you will have no problems with duplication of posts and you will have the time to upload the images one at a time onto your new host’s servers.

[grins] Where were you a couple days ago when I uploaded and relinked my images at my new blog? :) The thought of course occured to me after I finished. :(

I do plan on keeping my blog here and marking it private after I get everything up and running on the new one. I don’t want to let go of the name.
