Old Domain – New Domain

  • Unknown's avatar

I am closing down a website and starting a new one so i wanted to speak with someone about the best way to go about doing this process.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • @cdynega, we can help. Are you just hoping to change the name of the site, or are you getting rid of old content as well?

If you’re getting rid of old content, I’d just make the old site private and start a new one.

If you intend to keep old content, redirect visitors to the new site, etc, there are some steps you’ll want to take into consideration. Let us know your goals and we’ll try to point you in the right direction.

    Hello Supernovia,

Yes i would like to keep the old content and create a new website with a new domain name that i recently purchased.

We want a new theme and new logo, but want to point visitors from the old site to our new site.

    Blessings

    Chris

I am able to log into the WordPress account I created a while back, but the system is completely unusable when I do so. I’m using a different browser now to keep it from logging in. Pretty much all I see is “Could not fetch the next page of posts” messages. Can’t access the help there. Can’t even input my own data (which seems to be missing, apart from my mugshot).

I wanted to use WordPress for a writing course I’ll be teaching later this year, but I can’t inflict this sort of thing on my students, smart though they are. Not sure what writing I lost, or if I just gave up on WordPress without writing anything, but right now I’m about ready to give up (again or for the first time). I’ve been wresting with WordPress for about an hour now and not feeling like I’m getting anywhere…

Perhaps the best solution is to throw everything away and start over, but I can’t even tell what I’d be losing. “Could not fetch the next page of posts” doesn’t reveal much.

  • @shannonjacobs695374035, since this is a different issue from the one in the original post, could you ensure you’re using WordPress.com (this may help), and if so, start a new topic here?
    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/?new=1

You can add a “modlook” tag if you’d like to get staff attention.

That way the person who started this topic won’t get unwanted notifications as we troubleshoot your issue. Thanks!

  • @cdynega, got it. Unless you have more than one account here with us, I’m guessing you can simply map the domain you bought to your site. Here’s how:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

That will take care of forwarding the old content to the new address automatically. And you can change the site name and logo under My Site > Customize.

If you get stuck or if your scenario isn’t quite what I’ve pictured (like if you have another account, or if you already have a site with the domain name and need a blog added to it, etc.) let us know more information and we’ll go from there.

Thanks, I think I had already figured out how to start a new topic. I can also confirm that all of the URLs in question are referring to wordpress.com and I can’t find any traces of a wordpress.org.

However, mostly I remain completely confused. I actually think this is somehow linked to my google identity and the old WordPress ID is separate in some way… I’ll pursue the issue back in that new topic (if I can find my way there again).

Not sure if I should even ACK, but this is an ACK. I’ll take the new observation over there…

  • @cdynega sorry for the extra pings here. We’re happy to help you sort this out; just let us know what you have in mind.

    Hello Supernova,

Thank you for the information. So i was planning to develop the new site first and then make the switch so i am not without a website during the construction process. What are your thoughts on doing it this way? Will i have to pay another fee to wordpress for developing the new website??

  • Unknown's avatar

Also we didn’t talk about forwarding clients that look for the old site over to the new site.

  • Got it, does the current (old) site have a custom domain? And is it hosted here under this account?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes it does and yes it is. The current domain is binharmony.com.

  • Okay. Actually that site isn’t here on our servers or on your account with us.

It looks like binharmony.com is registered through and hosted by GoDaddy, so probably the easiest way forward is to contact them and ask them how to change the domain on your account. Also, you might ask them how to forward binharmony.com to the new site as well, in case folks (or search engines) are using old links.

  • Also, if it helps, WordPress.org (the free software project, that lets you install your own copy of WordPress anywhere) and WordPress.com (the site hosting service service) have several differences. These are the forums for the service, but you can find help for the free software here:
    https://wordpress.org/support

    I hope that helps!
