old link redirecting to new site address
-
Hello,
I am planning to change the site addres of my blog in the settings panel. My question is what will happen with the current posts – will the old link be redirecting to the new address automatically or will I need to manage to do it myself?
I’ve found some information about using “Change of Address Tool” but not gonna lie, it all sounded complicated.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hello there,
Just to check, are you looking to register a custom domain?
If yes, there would be a redirect automatically in place which will redirect all posts and pages to the new domain.
If changing the address as per: https://wordpress.com/support/changing-site-address/#changing-your-word-press-com-site-address
This will result in broken links and no redirect.
I hope this is useful.

Hi,
The second option. So there’s no way to do it manually and the current posts will have new links with old ones leading to nothing?

You can do that by following the steps to set up a “site redirect” here: https://wordpress.com/support/site-redirect/
Please note that the redirect is not a free option, but you typically only need it for a year and can let it expire after that. By then your readers, as well as Google and other search engines will have made adjustments to account for the new address of your site, and the site redirect is not needed after that.
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
