Old .org site still exists

I did a move once to .org and then now again I am currently back on .com. What’s bothering me is when I go to my sites panel, I see the old .org blog and my current .com blog. And the old.org blog now keeps notifying me about installing the latest version of jet pack.

What’s bothering me even more, is that I am worried if google will regard this as duplication and pull down my site rating.

    Should I be worried?
Is there anyway I can get rid of the old .org site?
Is that old .org site even harmful in anyway?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Even here when I had to select the blog for which I am writing this topic about, the drop down showed me thereddotman.com twice.

If the old site and the new site have the same content, then yes. Search engines will count that as duplication. You can get rid of the old site by signing into it and setting it to Private. That’ll get it off search engines faster than just deleting it.

MAKE SURE YOU ARE ON THE RIGHT BLOG. Don’t delete teh one here just because you mapped the domain to it. Go in to your .org blog via the Cpanel if you can and delete it there.

    I am not sure actually.

It’s like this. The older site had the tagline “HDR street photography and digital art by irfan hussain” and the current one reads “Photography blog of irfan hussain”. Form the my sites panel, which ever one I click, it takes me to the current one.

I am not sure of the logic behind it. I might sound paranoid. But I fear that if the delete the old one, it will impact the current one too. Like may be the posts and comments from the older one will all get deleted, or even worse, end up deleting the current one by doing so.

I wish I could post a screen shot or something to show it to you.

Also, I just clicked on my cpanel link, and it says website not found :(

It’s working now http://thereddotman.com/ goes to your WordPress.com blog. Set the old one to private, if you can still log into it. Note that you will not be able to log into it from http://thereddotman.com/, which has been moved to a different website. You’ll have to log in to it at its original web address, which would be something like 172.34.24.3/wp-admin or something like that. The web address it had before you had a domain name for it.

Damn it!!! It still says webpage not available. I don’t get it, if the webpage is not available then why the hell does it show up in my sites page? Granted that clicking on it is only taking me to the current blog, granted that I am not able to login and see the error “This webpage not available” when I try to access it using the domain address from my old domain provider. Then why should it show up in my sites?

It takes up to 72 hours for the DNS to settle down once you change where a domain points. Also if you have Jetpack installed on the old site, it will show on your list of blogs here unless staff take it off. Do you want them to?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, it was a .org site. So yeah, had jet pack. And yes I would like it to be removed. And the move happened long ago, a lot more than 72 hours.

Duplicate websites are a big turnoff for search engines, so yeah, I would to have it removed, as long as it won’t impact my current site in anyway.

Don’t worry, the domain only points to one site and search engines can’t find a site with no domain, so you don’t have the duplicate issue. I’ll flag this for staff.

Thank you so much for putting up with such a noob. Yes, please do so.

    Hi Irfan,

I removed the old Jetpack-linked site from your account, so you’re all set — you’ll only see your WordPress.com site on your My Sites page now. :)
