Old posts going out as new on RSS when edited

  • Unknown's avatar

When I edit old posts they show up in my Google reader as new. This seems to happen only with the WordPress.com feed. I have a Feedburner feed and it doesn’t seem to be effected but I fear that I’m spamming my WordPress.com followers with old posts whenever they get edited.

The recent photo sizing feasco had me editing dozens of old posts . . . I’ve since stopped editing old posts. Does anyone know how to make it so that old posts don’t go out as new?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    @schmidtbd
Unfortunately Volunteers cannot help with this. I’m flagging this thread for Staff attention.

    Thanks timetheif!

Here’s a link to a screen capture of my google reader:

The top post, Charleston Too, was originally published in 2010. I edited and updated the file moments ago and it hit my reader as a new post.

Here is the post I edited:

    Charleston, Too

    Thanks again,
    Brian

I just checked my Google reader, and this is the url of that feed:

    Hi again Brian,
Thanks for posting links to specific examples. I’m sure they will be helpful to Staff when it comes to responding to this issue.

That post, Charleston Too, does not appear in the feed coming out of wordpress.com at http://everywhereonce.com/feed/ .

This is likely an issue with Google reader since the feed here does not show the edit on that post.

Maybe, but it doesn’t happen with the Feedburner feed. I subscribed to both in G Reader and only get the old updates coming through from the WordPress feed.

I guess it could be a problem on Google’s end, but it is specific to the WordPress feed.

Even though feedburner is owned by Google now, they are different services, and like I said, the RSS feed coming out of here does not have the edited post on it, so to my way of thinking, this is something peculiar to Google Reader. I’m speculating, but that is how it seems to me.

Agreed, the top of the feed does not show the old posts. But clearly the old posts are going through the feed. Otherwise Google Reader wouldn’t know they’ve been updated.

My guess is that somehow there is a miscommuncation between the wordpress feed and google reader where wordpress is saying that something was updated but not communicating that it shouldn’t be sent out as new.

Feeds, by general definition contain everything, even edits, so it is up to whatever is pulling the feed to determine if it wants to show those edits or not. At least that is my understanding. Have you checked the preferences or options on Google Reader (I’ve never used it myself) to see if it has a setting to not show edits or duplicates or something? Again, I never used it so I don’t know.

Apparently this has been a problem with Google Reader since at least 2009.

Wow, 2 years, huh? I guess I shouldn’t be too optimistic about getting it fixed. LOL.

There may be a preference setting I could change, but that doesn’t really help me. If the default setting shows these edits, then everyone reading my blog with Google reader is going to have the same problem. My worry is that my subscribers are getting spamed with a bunch of old posts. I suspect that is true for every wordpress.com blogger – whether they know it or not.

Seems like something we all have to live with.

    Thanks for your thoughts!

It wouldn’t be just here, it would be any blog, or for that matter any RSS feed where something older is updated.

Google does some of the strangest things. Take for instance not putting a feed reader in Chrome.

  • Unknown's avatar

That would explain why staff have been adamant that this never occurs here, while we have obvious cases where it does. But I didn’t realize the problem is on the reader side.

Apparently it is, and since that google support forum post I reference mentions an older post on the “old” forum it could have been an issue for even longer. Much like the 360+ XHTML validation errors on new blogger/blogspot blogs that was introduced in 2006 and not corrected until 2010 (if you consider now having over 100 to be “corrected”).

It seems google developers only takes things to about 75% done and then they abandon them for some new shiny bobble.

I’ve only just had this issue show up, yesterday.

I often update old posts and have never had them resent to me.

Yesterday, had one go out in my email feed, but it didn’t get re-posted in my Google Reader feed.

    My feed is http://feeds.feedburner.com/TheYogaLunchbox

I edited another old post yesterday… so am just waiting to see if it gets sent out again this morning!

Please post an active link starting with http:// to the blog to which your refer. Note also > WordPress.com vs WordPress.org: The Differences as I believe you may be posting to the wrong support forum. This is the correct forum for those referring to WordPress.ORG installs to post to http://wordpress.ORG/support/
