old posts re-posted as new posts

I’m in the process of making several years worth of posts private, as described in this forum

    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/make-all-old-posts-private?replies=2

It seems to be working, for the most part, except several of my old posts have now appeared as newly published posts.

This is extremely annoying! Now, every time I log into my page, these posts are on top.

How do I send them back where they belong?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Aloha cindycb, It sounds like these posts may have been marked as “sticky” posts, which will display them above other posts. This page shows where that setting is located if you want to verify that:

    Hey Geoffrey

Thanks for your response! Unfortunately they are not marked as sticky. Somehow, they were all posted with a new date. In order for me to send them back where they were originally posted, it seems I would have to post them again with their original older date…

Sorry for the delay in responding! In the past when I’ve seen that it has been because they were sticky posts, so I’m not sure what else would cause that. I will see if I can find any other similar issues.

Instead of re-posting them, you may be able to edit the date of the posts. You can also do this using quick edit if it is easier for you:

    Geoffrey

Thanks for continuing to correspond with me about this. If worst comes to worst, I would edit the date, but because I have so many years worth of entries, it’s pretty impossible for me to guess when the posts that surfaced to the top were originally published.

    Hello there –

I’m in the process of making several years worth of posts private

If those posts are private, the only people who will see them are you and any other Admin or Editor on your site. So I guess that’s a polite way of saying it’s a bit of effort to juggle the dates because they can’t be done in bulk, but of course that is up to you.

Another way you could do this is by exporting all your content to an XML file and importing it to a new, blank Private site and then once all the content has been ported over (including media), emptying the existing site so you can start fresh. Let me know if you want more info on that.

I also notice that you are using one of the oldest themes here (WP Classic) on your site. I would like to suggest that you consider switching to a newer theme. As time goes on, retired themes like it are no longer updated and do not support WordPressdotcom’s new features and updates. Not being a responsive width theme can also have an impact on your site ranking in search engine returns. Let us know if you would like suggestions for a newer theme. https://wordpress.com/themes/
