Old site content?

  • Unknown's avatar

I originally designed a site but then changed to a different theme. There is content from the original site that didn’t get transferred over to the new site (both on WordPress) but I have no clue where I might find the old site – or if that is even possible. I really hope it is as otherwise that content is lost forever.

Thanks in advance for your help!

    Hi there,

Did you have this problem on your WordPress.com site at http://communitydoulaservices.com/ or a different site? If it’s a different one, can you send me a link to the site?

When you switch themes, certain features specific to the theme may not be transferred over to the new theme. If you had widgets set up for your site (under Appearance > Widgets in your dashboard) those may not be automatically transferred to your new theme. However, you can find your old widgets saved on that widgets page near the bottom, under “Inactive Widgets.” You can drag those inactive widgets to the sidebar to reactive them with your new theme.

If that’s not the content you’re referring to, please let me know. Once you’ve confirmed what site you’re working on and what content is missing, I can look into this further for you!

Yes it was for communitydoulaservices.com. I had one designer make a site for me with a theme that I purchased from WordPress but then I didn’t like it so I had another designer make me another one. I can’t see the original site anywhere and because I didn’t do any of the work myself I’m not really sure what they did. I really need to old content so I’m hoping it is still available!

Thanks for confirming that. The only site linked to your WordPress.com account is the one currently at communitydoulaservices.com. That one was created about 6 months ago, at the beginning of May.

If a different designer made you an older version of the site, you’ll need to contact that designer for more information about where and how they created the site. If they did it here at WordPress.com, we may be able to help you find and recover it. Otherwise, you’ll need to request that old content from the designer so you can import it into your new site here at WordPress.com.

Please let me know if I can provide any further help with this.

See that is where I’m confused – the one I am looking for is the one that was created 6 months ago using the “On a Whim” theme but the only one I can see is the current one they made using the “Crystal” theme…

Ah, I see! Your domain is currently being used with a self-hosted WordPress site. However, the content of your old site is here at WordPress.com. (I got confused, too, because our records only show the information about your WordPress.com site.)

You can get to the content of your old WordPress.com site from your dashboard at this link:

    https://communitydoulaservices.wordpress.com/wp-admin/

To export the contents of your WordPress.com site you can go to Tools > Export in your dashboard at that link. From there, you can create an export file, which you can use to import the content over on your self-hosted site. We have more information about that here: Export

Let me know if you have any questions about that. :)
